Some good news for the Sharks

Well, it’s early days still, but there are some encouraging signs that a few missing stalwarts might return for the Sharks this weekend. The team is hurting after an unexpected loss to the Cheetahs and are looking for a boost against the in-form Crusaders this weekend.

Bismarck du Plessis hurt his ribs during a practice late last week and was forced to withdraw from the Cheetahs game at late notice, along with front-row colleague Beast Mtawarira, who had flu. The latter will definitely figure this week, while the combative hooker is also rated as odds-on to play some part on Saturday. Steven Sykes will presumably reclaim his number 4 jersey from Albert van den Berg as well.

In other really encouraging news, both Jean Deysel and Waylon Murray look to have recovered sufficiently from knee injuries to possibly join the match 22. JP Pietersen is at this stage rated as an outside prospect, but is definitely not out of the running for this weekend’s game either.

Not too sure about you guys, but even the prospect of just two or three of these five guys making it back into the team for this weekend is enough to give me a huge amount of confidence going into such a crucial game.

Let’s go get ‘em, Sharks. We’re all behind you, no matter what.

  • Sharks are going to need Deysel back as soon as possible.

  • THAT’s the type of article I like to read.

FRs back, Murray back, Deysel back, would do me JUST fine. Add to that JPP and Ruan waiting in the wings and “Die kaap is weer Hollands”

    GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!

Must say though Murray should play a VC or club game first he hasn’t played since Noah built the ark almost.

  • @Whindy (Comment 4) :

You are right. But I think it is because he is just working more in the tight loose now, as he should, rather than running around in the backline.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 5) : the inclusion of Daniel for Deysel has a knock-on effect for the whole pack.

  • So they weren’t even ‘rested’ but injured last week… further credence Plummo hasn’t a clue about 22man rugby…

  • Albert is too old now, we need another lock on the bench.

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 9) : dude, what are you meant to do when two of your frontrow reserves pull out on the eve of the match? I think you need to at least acknowledge that Plum was missing at lest a third of his regular 22 last week. That’s going to weaken any team

  • @Rahul (Comment 10) : I disagree. Albert is still superb at what he does. But he’s NOT a good starting option, particularly not at number 4.

BTW, I hope the “Sykes is average” brigade learned something important this weekend.

  • @Whindy (Comment 4) : you’re right but also remember that with this forward rotation he often comes off the bench.
Can’t help thinking that Plum is doing to forwards what was happening to backs last year.
Hope he knows and they know who the best 3 are.

  • @Rahul (Comment 13) : Albert is a superb ball poacher. His nickname is “spinnekop” because he uses his long limbs to “interfere” with opposition ball at the breakdown. Watch how often he ends up emerging with the ball after a ruck, only to break right through.

He is also bloody quick and a pretty safe lineout option. All-in-all, about all that you want from a RESERVE lock

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) :

Had they not been injured he’d have played the same 15 for 80% of the game every game (other than the luxury of front row rotation) of that I’m sure…

Now when you take into account the Sharks are making more than double their opponents tackles every single game (on avg 200 plus per game is being conservative, game before Cheetahs was 270 tackles to opponents 103)… it becomes scary at just how over-played these okes are/ have been… and perhaps a reason for the amt of injuries due to ‘game plan A’ week in and out with no rotation…

  • @rekinek (Comment 19) :

Other than the ‘pick and drive’ with the 9 as an extra forward… not Plumtree’s forte… same way his Wellington team played every season in the NPC… and some here think it is simply Kockott choosing to be selfish… yawn…
