Sharks welcome back a host of stars

JP Pietersen has been bracketed with Waylon Murray on the wing (despite assuring me that he’ll be ready!) for the Sharks against the Crusaders this weekend. Other notable returnees include Jean Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira.

It’s a hugely experienced team that has been named and considerably stronger than the outfit that went down in a shock loss to the Cheetahs. Du Plessis will start in the number 2 shirt, after a pretty sub-standard performance from John Smit in Bloemfontein. Beast joins Smit on the bench, handing Deon Carstens and Jannie du Plessis successive starts at prop. Steven Sykes is back at tight lock, with Al van den Berg on the bench.

The loose trio is unchanged, with Keegan Daniel starting on the blindside flank. Deysel replaces Skholiew Ndlovu in the number 19 shirt – the latter drops out of the squad altogether, along with Pat Cilliers and Skipper Badenhorst.

The backline is mostly unchanged – Frans Steyn continues at flyhalf as Ruan Pienaar is still two weeks away from fitness. Pietersen (or Murray) will come in at left wing for Luzuko Vulindlu, with the latter poised to take a spot on the bench should Pietersen not play. More likely, though, is that Murray will be in the number 22 shirt, with Zuks joining Chris Jordaan in the stands. Charl McLeod and Monty Dumond retain their positions on the substitutes bench.

  • @Charlie (Comment 2) : no… Smit looks tired and Carstens was one of the few forwards to actually look reasonable last week. I think it’s the right front row. Take advantage of the “du Plessis synergy” factor

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) :

Smit does not look tired, he looks confused as to his role at the Sharks.

  • I think Adi needs a break.

He seems to be missing a lot of tackles of late.

Murray to start at 13 with Adi moving to the bench.

    What do you guys think??

  • no ways… Adi is the major creative force in the backline. If anything, the problem is that they need to play him closer to the action, at 12.

Murray hasn’t created so much as a row of beans in two years…
