Ian McGeechan has announced his Lions squad of 37 players to tour South Africa in 39 Days time.

Paul O’Connell has been appointed captain for the 2009 Lions tour to South Africa, but three Six Nations skippers have been omitted from the 37-man squad.

O’Connell edged out team-mate and Ireland’s Grand Slam-winning skipper Brian O’Driscoll for the most prestigious job in British and Irish rugby.

The 29-year-old lock has led Ireland on just four occasions and becomes the nation’s 10th Lions captain.

He leads a squad with 14 representatives from Ireland, 13 from Wales, eight from England and two from Scotland.

And that squad doesn’t include Wales captain Ryan Jones, England skipper Steve Borthwick and their Scotland counterpart Mike Blair.

Other absentees include Jonny Wilkinson, Danny Cipriani, Gavin Henson and James Hook, plus the shock omission of England flanker Tom Croft.

But there were surprise call-ups for the likes of Munster pair Keith Earls and Alan Quinlan in a squad that will be captained by their Munster colleague.

  • @Rahul (Comment 2) : Don’t agree with you there, he is a big boy has speed and the added bow of being able to kick for posts, not to much to complain about there. He has also been in good form for the Cardiff blues

  • @Pokkel (Comment 27) : DSTV are becoming expansive, hope they allow rugby package, like they do with the soccer, or maybe just allow the same channels on the dish as they have with Mnet on the Decoder…

  • Only having two flyhalves in the squad shows a lot of confidence.

They are either going to work very hard over the tour or there is going to be a very early very definite distinction between who is # 1 and who is # 2.

  • I wonder if it will be Phillips or O’Leary who gets the #9 nod.

    I quite enjoy Phillips game.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 29) : Remember that Flutey is a retreaded flyhalf so he can cover if necessary. That is where he made his name in NZ!

  • McGeechan has gone for a MONSTER pack. I guess he wants to fight fire with fire. Just look at the locks….O’Connell,Hines and Wyn-Jones picked themselves…but he’s gone for the bulk and aggression of Shaw and O’Callaghan as the other 2.

Worsely is the “tree cutter” and VITAL against a team like the Boks. He will perform the role that Richard Hill and Dallaglio did in the past. Rumour has it that David Wallace could be played at number 8.

  • @Whindy (Comment 31) : Yep…he could go for the Welsh 8,9,10 of Andy Powell, Mike Phillips and Stephen Jones

or the Irish axis of Heaslip, O’Leary and O’Gara! Very close thing. As Gatland is major part of coaching team, the Welsh group could be slight favourites.

I certainly think he will want to start with the much greater physical presence of Mike Phillips rather than Tomas O’Leary!
