Sharks XV named for Quarter-Final showdown

The Sharks XV have named a strong line-up to take on the Young Lions in the Vodacom Cup quarter-final in Durban on Friday at 5pm. Entrance to the ABSA Stadium is free, so get on down and show the team your support.

There are a number of interesting constraints that have affected Sean Everitt’s selections this week, not the least of which is the requirement that a player must have played at least three games in the round-robin and quarter-final stages in order to be available for semi-final selection. Ross Cronje, Pat Cilliers and Skipper Badenhorst have all been fast-tracked into the starting line-up this week in order to ensure that they qualify for selection for next week’s semi-final, should the Sharks XV be victorious against the Lions.

A number of Sharks fringe players have been included and this is obviously just about match practice, since few of them would be eligible next week anyway. Of the players named, Skholiwe Ndlovu, Waylon, Murray, Trevor Halstead and Luzuko Vulindlu will all need to fall out of contention going into the semi-final.

Cilliers starts at loosehead prop, with another youngster, Wiehahn Herbst on the other side of the scrum. Badenhorst is at hooker, while Joe Snyman returns to partner Nolan Clarke at lock. Justin Downey shifts to the blindside flank as Mike Rhodes drops out due to injury. Ndlovu is at openside and Warren Whiteley continues in the number 8 jersey he has occupied all season. Craig Burden, Sabelo Nhlapo, Jandre Marais and Nick Claasen are the forward reserves.

The Cronje twins continue at halfback and one can only assume that Guy is in at flyhalf at the expense of Len Olivier to ensure that the former has enough games under his belt to be a part of the squad next weekend. Monty Dumond and Charl McLeod are on the bench and while both have played at least three games for the Sharks XV this year, they are likely to be on duty with the Super 14 squad next weekend anyway. Ian Adendorff is the unlucky one to make way in midfield, as Trevor Halstead continues alongside skipper Andries Strauss. It’s an odd move, since (as already mentioned) Halstead won’t be able to play next week.

Zuks Vulindlu is at right wing, with Lwazi Mvovo and Chris Jordaan completing the back three. The latter is back in his preferred position of fullback.

  • @bryce_in_oz (Comment 1) : I haven’t watched, but based on the number of tries they’ve been scoring, I’d say the loose trio are playing pretty well.

As for Sabs, also not so sure. He’s pretty tall for a prop, that’s for sure.

  • Murray could do some match practice, that’s for sure.
Perhaps ol’ Trev could show him how to run straight.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 4) : ha ha… perfect combination. Waylon and Trev. 210kgs of solid muscle with the ability to run right over or right around the opposition depending on the situation :)

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) :

    I’m still fighting for that.
Apparently I committed myself to attending the IPL game at Kingsmead this afternoon – still negotiating to get out of that contract.
