The Stormers finish off their less than successful tour of Australasia in Dunedin.

Schalk Burger, stand in captain, is quoted as saying: “Every match starts and ends at front and hopefully we can win the physical battle.”

I sincerely hope that he intends winning more than just the physical battle. Against the Highlanders the Stormers have less chance of winning either the physical battle or the match than they have of winning the tournament.

  • Pienaar set to be SA’s goalkicker

    by Stephen Nell | 23 April 2009 (22:48)

    Ruan Pienaar © Gallo Images
Ruan Pienaar will be South Africa’s goalkicker in the test series against the British and Irish Lions.

Click here for the latest rugby video highlights

That was the message on Thursday from Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, who was asked about the idea of bringing Percy Montgomery out of retirement for the looming series. Former Wallaby coach Eddie Jones told Sport24 this week that South Africa should consider asking Montgomery to come out of retirement.

“I can’t understand how a top rugby brain says that,” De Villiers said in his reaction.

“Why is Naas Botha not playing anymore? There is a time to come and a time to go for everyone. I have too much respect for Percy to pick him.

“I can see when a player’s best days are behind him. I’m not going to break down Percy’s image and have people say he should not have been there.

“Percy has not played badly this year. He is just no longer good enough to take us to the next level.

“I pick Ruan (at flyhalf) because he has so many dimensions to his game. One of his attributes is that he can kick and he is really good at that.”

Pienaar kicked well on South Africa’s end-of-season tour and De Villiers believes that was the result of hard work prior to their departure.

“I trust the people around me. If Ruan’s goalkicking is not good enough I will drop him. He has to do the job. That is what he is paid for!”

De Villiers believes Pienaar’s natural talent will help bring the best out of South Africa’s backline.

“Ruan is a gifted rugby player. I view him as the Tiger Woods of rugby,” said De Villiers.

“It’s important for him to have the freedom to express himself. If we show confidence him, I think our outside backs will have a chance of penetrating.”

  • Going to steal updates from Rugby 365

Welcome to Carisbrook where the Highlanders take on the Stormers in the first match of this weekend’s S14 clashes. The Stormers have been woeful under-performers and are just playing for pride and nothing more. The Highlanders on the other hand are in contention for a sport in the play-offs. They will be a dangerous team today as they will look to get 5 against the Stormers and put pressure on the top dogs.

De Waal gets things going for the Stormers and the Highlanders have a lineout on their 22m.Poor lineout and the Stormers have a scrum on the 22m. Solid scrum and the Stormers work through the phases and end up with a penalty,Grant wants the three points and he misses badly

Highlanders get a free kick from the restart and Berquist puts it out on the 50m. Bekker wins the ball and the Stormers attack out wide and then Duvenhage kicks and then Dagg collects, beats Bobo and hits a beauty of a kick and its out inside the Stormers 22m

Stormers win their ball and Duvenhage kicks and then the Highlanders attack and Shoemark beats Naqelevuki but is out in touch. Stormers win their ball and kick it out, the Highlanders lineout is scrappy and the Stormers come away with it and after a few kicks the Highlanders have a lineout on their 10m.

  • Another scrappy lineout and the Highlanders get away with it and after a few kicks the Highlanders have a 22m drop out and a few kicks later, Jantjes kicks too long and the Highlanders get a scrum on the Stormers 10m. Solid scrum but the Highlanders concede possession and the Stormers have a scrum, good work at the ruck by the Stormers forwards

Stormers win their scrum and a few kicks later Vermuelen decides to run it and gets smashed but the Stormers get the lineout. Solid ball but then the Highlanders win turn over the ball in midfield and then get another on the Stormers 22m. The Stormers defend well and Duvenhage hacks the ball out

The Highlanders get their ball and are on the attack for a few phases but then the Stormers turn it over and Jantjes goes long and finds Dagg and he returns the favour, De Waal use the boot and finds touch in the Highlanders 22m.

    O-O

  • A Stormers hand knocks the ball forwards and the Highlanders have a scrum in their 22m. Solid work from the Highlanders and Cowan’s kick is out on the 10m. Taken quickly and the Stormers go wide to Bobo who runs and then chips, Berquist gets back and carries it over and dots the ball, 5m scrum for the Stormers. Solid scrum and then Grant takes it up and then Burger and then Watson, but he loses the ball in contact, turn over and the Highlanders end up with a scrum just outside their 22m

  • The Stormers lose their lineout ball and the Highlanders attack out wide with Berquist and Bowden keeping the Stormers defence honest and then the wide pass to Shoemark forcing Bobo to come in and then the over lap created, the is a desperate tackle and then the inevitable penalty is given to the Highlanders.Berquist wants the three pointer, and he gets it, score 3-0.

  • From Keo
“French media confirm that Steyn has signed for Paris-based second division side Racing Metro, who have virtually secured their place in the Top 14. The year-long deal is reported to be the most lucrative ever for a South African player. Steyn will make the move to Paris after the Springboks’ end of year tour.

His negotiations with Racing was the worst kept secret in South African rugby and in recent months it became increasingly likely that Steyn would agree a deal.

A month ago Sharks coach John Plumtree told keo.co.za they were desperate to hold onto Steyn, but he was resigned to the fact that they would never be able to match what Racing was offering.

Steyn will play primarily in his preferred position of flyhalf for Racing. With Ruan Pienaar injured, Steyn has had an extended run at pivot for the Sharks, but has failed to shatter the widely held perception that he is better suited to inside centre – where the Sharks and Springboks see his future. He appears to be hellbent on proving that he has the aptitude to play in the position, but this seems like an extreme way to make his point.”

    Bye bye Fransie.

  • Deep restart by the Stormers and the Highlanders run it back and then end up around the 50m but give away a scrum. Solid scrum and the kick finds Dagg who kicks it back and the Stormers have a lineout near the 50m The Stormers attack from the lineout but end up losing the ball forward, according to the ref. Solid scrum and a few kicks later, Dagg puts the ball out just outside the Stormers 22m,

  • De Waal restarts and a few kicks and then Bowden knocks the ball on and the Stormers attack but just run into a wall of Highlanders tacklers. The final result is a Highlanders scrum just outside their 22m. Good pressure on Cowan and his kick gets charged down, but he gets a second bite at the cherry and finds Janjtes who gets smashed and knocks the ball on, scrum on the 50m.

  • Fransie is leaving?

    Also neutral on this one.

I think he has loads of potential, but right now he is wasting it; primarily by insisting that he is a 10, but even by silly and often selfish play when playing 12 or whatever.

A few seasons abroad could transform his game; just hope he returns to the Sharks.

It seeems as if he has been signed as a flyhalf at Metro, so I think that is how he sees himself. Im sure they put in a clause that he would be selected in that position exclusively.
Definately better at centre than flyhalf.

  • The Highlanders attack and they mean business and first use Shoemark to take it up and then they go wide and after 18 phases they lose the ball, but credit must go to the Stormers defence which held out nicely.

  • The kick from De Waal is not dealt with by Dagg and Smith, but Vainikolo gets back to help, then the Highlanders run it back, Shoemark makes a break and Bekker runs back to make the tackle and then he gives away a penalty, Dagg over hits it and the Stormers go for a 22m drop out.

  • @blackshark – YNWA (Comment 118) : Nah but it take that urgency factor out of the players once they get knock out of a semi place. Now the Brutes have to win against the Chiefs and the Stormers must knock them over totally.

Havent watch the game but I just knew they will come good at some stage. To late but never mind, as long as we can help the others SA teams course.

Would have love to see the young Ikey and Newman also getting runs.

  • Very happy for the Stormers, a good win next week and the week after that and all will be forgotten, and the stadium will be full, the management will be secure in their positions, the coach and the players will be chuffed and the media will be competing to come up with super superlatives. We will look back and not even remember that there was any angst throught April 2009.

The Stormers had just the one big lost against the Canes last week but the others was really close ones BUT first the Brutes have to do it on their own. Hope they dont lose out like the Shark last week. This big ones is double points on offer for the away team.
