Fourie back to inspire the Lions

The Lions have made a handful of changes to their team for the Super 14 match against the Crusaders on Friday, the most notable being the return of their inspirational Springbok centre, Jaque Fourie.

Rugby 365 reports that the Lions will hope that Fourie, along with the other changes, can help them bounce back from a humiliating defeat against the Force last weekend in Perth.

The Lions should be buoyed by the return of the star No.13 and a return home to Johannesburg after their four match Australasian tour.

Along with the return of Fourie, there is a possibility that captain Cobus Grobbelaar will return, pending a call on his fitness. ‘Baywatch’ has thus been bracketed with Johan Deventer to start in the No.6 jersey in the only possible change to the pack.

Further changes have seen a backline shuffle, with Louis Ludik back at fullback at the expense of Earl Rose, who drops to the bench. Jannie Boshoff is on the left wing for an injured Henno Mentz, with Deon van Rensburg shifting to the right wing to accommodate Fourie.

The Lions will be up against a Crusaders team who are desperate for a win after a loss to the Cheetahs last week, which left them in eighth position on the log.

Lions: 15 Louis Ludik, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Doppies la Grange, 11 Jannie Boshoff, 10 André Pretorius, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Willem Alberts, 7 Ernst Joubert, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar (captain)/Johan van Deventer, 5 Anton van Zyl, 4 Jannes Labuschagne, 3 Lawrence Sephaka, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Replacements: 16 Hans van Dyk, 17 Gert Muller, 18 Gerhard Mostert, 19 Robert Kruger, 20 Chris Jonck, 21 Earl Rose, 22 Michael Killian.

  • C’mon Lions.

I picked the Saders to win BIG on SB, that was before I knew Fourie was back and maybe Grobbelaar as well.

Add to that the absence on McCaw from the Crusaders side and I have picked the wrong team.

    Go Lions!!!

  • Just a note that I also just heard that Baywatch was cleared to play, so he will start at 6

  • It’s a bit of a pity, I would have liked to see Johan van Deventer make his Super 14 debut and see if he can make the step up. He is (we hope) the Lions answer to Brussouw from the Cheetahs

  • They just sent another update:

The Auto & General Super 14 Lions have just completed their Captains Run
ahead of the match tomorrow. Cobus “Baywatch” Grobbelaar has
unfortunately been ruled out of the game after his ankle flamed up again
this morning. As a result, Johan “Biscuit” van Deventer will replace
Grobbelaar in the number 6 jersey in his Super 14 debut and Jaque Fourie
will take over the captaincy roll.

OK, so Beast has one, but “Baywatch”, “Varkhond” and now “Biscuit”, WTF?

I wonder if he is a Romany Cream or just a wafer?

He only turned 21 this year, but comes with a great pedigree, Lions craven week captain twice, Junior Boks twice, etc..I’m very glad for him that he gets this opportunity, lets just hope he uses it!

  • Okay, the 1st one that I’m allowed to tell you is Ettas, he signed for Saracens during the week, and we were going to announce it next week, but Saracens announced it on their website so there you go.

  • The players that are speculated about are Wepener, Pretorius, Van Zyl, Joubert, Fourie and I don’t know who the other three are.

  • Perhaps Killian and Jonck, I’m sure they can’t be too happy with the game time they got this year in the S14
