Saracens have turned to South Africa again as they recruit for next season, adding hooker Ethienne Reynecke to their squad.

PA Sport reports that the 27-year-old has been a regular with the Johannesburg-based Lions in their Super 14 and Currie Cup campaigns and with the likes of Carlos Nieto, Fabio Ongaro and England Saxons prop Tom Mercey all battling it out for front-row spots in the starting line-up next season, the signing of Reynecke adds depth to Sarries’ resources.

Incoming director of rugby Brendan Venter, who has already turned to his native South Africa to sign the likes of Frik Venter, said: “Ethienne is fiery, competitive and physical and he fits the profile of the kind of player that we feel will be successful in the Guinness Premiership.

“He’s a player who comes to us with Super 14 experience and his signing adds more depth to our front row. We’re delighted to have secured his services.”

The 6ft, 16 stone hooker’s speed and power allows him to cover ground like a loose forward and since making his Super 14 debut in 2007, he has made 20 appearances for the franchise while also appearing 34 times at a provincial level for the Golden Lions.

Stormers captain Jean de Villiers says he will consider playing his rugby overseas after the British & Irish Lions series.

Many senior Springboks see the Lions series as a watershed in their playing careers and a significant exodus of players is expected after this season.

De Villiers’ has been linked to Irish Magners League club Munster while it is also believed a French club was willing to pay ZAR 5.6m a year to secure his services.

“My contract expires at the end of the year. I have always had an open mind about playing overseas at some stage. I will do that at some point in the future,” De Villiers told Die Burger.

“At this stage my focus is to recover from my groin injury and to be ready for the series against the Lions. I will make a decision about my future after that.”
