Rassie makes three changes

Rassie Erasmus, head coach of the Vodacom Stormers, on Wednesday announced his team to play the Force at Newlands on Saturday 9 May in a Vodacom Super 14 match. Kick-off is at 19h10.

The Stormers website reports that the coach made three changes to the team that started in the defeat to the Chiefs at Newlands last Saturday.

Fullback Conrad Jantjes broke his leg and utility back Joe Pietersen takes over in the last line of defence. Pietersen is back in the side after being overlooked for the overseas leg of the Stormers’ overseas campaign. He played for Vodacom WP in the Vodacom Cup competition.

Gcobani Bobo is also back at wing after missing the previous match due to injury. He replaces Tonderai Chavhanga, who goes to the substitute bench after starting for the first time in a long while last weekend after recovering from a hamstring injury.

At flank Peter Louw will be starting in place of Springbok Schalk Burger, who has to rest for the next two weeks after hurting his calf against the Chiefs. Burger took over the captaincy from Jean de Villiers, who is also injured.

In Burger’s absence Luke Watson, who led the team for two seasons, will be taking the reins again.

Tigthhead prop Brian Mujati also returns from injury, but he will be one of the substitutes. His return meant there was no place for Tiger Bax, the UCT fullback who replaced Jantjes last weekend.

Should Schalk Brits take to the field on Saturday, it will be his 50th cap for the Stormers.

FNB Maties take on FNB UCT in an intervarsity curtain raiser at 16h00.

Tickets are on sale and can be bought from the Newlands Rugby Stadium Box office and through Computicket, Shoprite Checkers and Checkers Hyperstores countrywide.

The Vodacom Stormers team is as follows:
15. Joe Pietersen
14. Gcobani Bobo
13. Dylan Des Fountain
12. Peter Grant
11. Sireli Naqelevuki
10. Willem De Waal
9. Dewaldt Duvenage
8. Luke Watson (C)
7 Duane Vermeulen
6. Pieter Louw
5. AJ Venter
4. Hilton Lobberts
3. Brock Harris
2. Tiaan Liebenberg
1. JD Moller

Reserves
16. Schalk Brits
17. Wicus Blaauw
18. Brian Mujati
19. Martin Muller
20. Ricky Januarie
21. Morgan Newman
22. Tonderai Chavhanga

Its called taking a stab in the dark – sooner or later just maybe the next best thing will be unearthed.

How do you play Bobs on the wing ahead of Chavanga if Chavanga isn’t injured.

That actually makes sense. I was almost going to Say Rassie is clutching at straws but it seems he is one of those cooks who just throws things in a pot and hopes for the best.

And if it sucks then he replaces a few ingredients next time no matter how well they actually worked.

  • @wpw (Comment 12) : Why is Willem starting? Move Bobes to 12, Grant to 10, Chav’s on the wing.
And honestly… WP was kak because Pietersen is kak, especially in an important position like flyhalf, why would you put him in an equally important position at a far more difficult competition? On wing he does the least damage. Percival at FB would’ve been best. Anyone heard why he’s not there, I’m just hoping its cause he’s still injured.

  • Maybe I should span the Osse again. Going to be hectic saturday, Paul Doos vs Gim, Boishaai vs Grey Bloem en Landbou vs Bishops oppie plaas. My kid play two rugby games plus a hockey one. Would like to see Maties tho.

Watch that midget Ikey fullback last week, Joe a much better option. Martin Muller impressed me last week, thought he would start this week.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 14) :

It is part of the plan to prevent the wings from over-running the centers and thus causing forward passes to be made.

Also this will prevent the wings from being to fast out of the blocks if the scrumhalf or flyhalf kicks the ball.

With this team the ref will never be able to accuse the wings of being in front of the kicker OR of having received a forward pass.

  • Rassie looks to Currie Cup
    2009-05-06 14:32

    Gavin Rich

Cape Town – The omission of Percy Montgomery from the Vodacom Stormers team for Saturday’s final home Super 14 match against the Force at Newlands can be explained by Rassie Erasmus’ long term plan.

In naming a team on Wednesday that included three changes from the one that went down 28-14 to the Chiefs last time out, Erasmus said that Joe Pietersen’s inclusion at fullback was with the Currie Cup in mind.

“Conrad Jantjes will be out for the entire Currie Cup season and maybe next year’s Super 14 as well, and as you know Percy is retiring after the Super 14, so it makes sense for us to play Joe there this week,” said Erasmus.

“Some of you wrote earlier in the season that Joe might have been set back a bit by being asked to play flyhalf by us, and maybe you were right. Fullback is Joe’s best position, and I would like to give him a chance to play there and show us what he can do ahead of the Currie Cup.

“Most of the players who are playing for us this week will also be playing for us in the Currie Cup, so this is a good time to start building towards that competition.”

Pietersen comes in for Jantjes, with Tiger Bax, who played as a replacement at Newlands, dropping out of the squad completely.

“We did not expect Conrad to get a big injury like that so early in the game. Our intention was to play Tiger later in the match, which would have been different,” said the coach.

Tonderai Chavhanga loses his place at right wing to Gcobani Bobo in the other backline change, while Pieter Louw comes in for the injured Schalk Burger on the flank. As announced earlier this week, Luke Watson assumes the captaincy.

Duane Vermeulen missed training on Wednesday due to a groin problem but Erasmus described it as a precautionary measure.

“With all the loose-forwards that we have out I just didn’t want to risk another injury to a flank,” he said.

Hooker Schalk Brits, who Erasmus says he still rates as one of potentially the best loose-forwards in the country, will act as loose-forward cover from the bench, with three front-row players being named among the reserves. Centre Morgan Newman comes onto the bench as one of the backline reserves.

You Stormers fans are in for a ROUGH ride. The last time Rassie used the early preparation excuse was when the Stormers didn’t make the Semi-Finals in last years CC. And we can see Where THAT got him. :???:

  • Eish, you have a Springbok with 100 caps who could play, but Rassie in his infinte wisdom of looking to the future reckons Joe is the future, i predict more of the same of what we have seen in the Super 14 to be dished up by the Stormers and Western Province for years to come.

Alternatively Monty is displaying a fine sense of leaving his name unsullied by not participating in what has become a fiasco of a season.

  • Geez! Rassie wanted to convert Schalk Ferreira from prop to hooker (before they had to phone England to get Liebenberg back ;-) ), Koster from 8 to wing, Bobo from centre to wing and now Brits to a loosie (and the best one sommer in the country!). No wonder Bekker has been considered as a wing cum fulback by PdV. (And Januari as prop/sh reserve) ;-D

Last night Rassie defended his selection of De Waal at 10 by saying you need to play for territory with the new ELV’s in place and therefore possession is not as important as playing in your opponent’s half.

The Sharks showed EARLY in the season that they could win with less possesion, but they seem to have moved away from that slightly.

I think Rassie is hoping the Force will make mistakes and allow the Stormers to capitalise on them.
