Former Springbok centre Robbie Fleck is set to be brought on board the Western Province management for this year’s Currie Cup.

Stephan Nell reports for sport24.co.za

Rob Wagner, managing director of WP Rugby, confirmed that he had reached an agreement with Fleck.

“Robbie Fleck will be the senior backline coach in the Currie Cup, and Matthew Proudfoot will be the senior forwards coach,” said Wagner.

“Fleckie has been involved as backs coach with the University of Cape Town in the Varsity Cup and their backline play was of a high standard.

“He was also involved in the coaching of the South African students team, and has played and been a leader at the highest level as South Africa’s vice-captain. We had an opening for an assistant coach in the Currie Cup,” he said.

Allister Coetzee stays in charge of WP’s Currie Cup side. Province made the decision about Fleck in consultation with Coetzee and Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus.

“We are striving to get to the top,” said Wagner.

UCT delivered the backline player of the tournament for the past two years in the Varsity Cup – James Martin in 2008 and Therlow Pietersen in 2009.

Head coach John Dobson said it was an excellent decision by WP to rope in Fleck.

“There are two outstanding backline coaches in South Africa – Pieter Rossouw and Robbie Fleck,” said Dobson.

Rossouw was previously involved as coach at under-19 level at WP, but has since taken up the job of coaching the Bulls’ backline. He commutes between Cape Town and Pretoria.

“Fleckie is a deep thinker about the game and has done incredibly good work at UCT. His interest lies in attacking play. He does a lot of research about backline play,” said Dobson.

“The young guys still remember him as a Springbok centre and his experience as a player at the highest level is valuable. It’s a very good decision by WP to get him involved.”

Fleck may stimulate some attacking ideas for WP in the Currie Cup. The Stormers have not gelled as an attacking unit in this year’s Super14.

While only the Waratahs, Crusaders and Sharks have conceded less points than the Stormers, the Cape side has scored the least after the Cheetahs.

Only the Cheetahs (20) and Waratahs (21) have scored less tries than the Stormers (22) in this year’s Super14.

If everything goes well, Fleck may be asked to assist with the coaching of the Stormers next year. The Currie Cup offers him an ideal change to build on what he achieved at club level.

I wonder if he still ‘thinks’ about that Deon Kayser tackle…

  • No wonder he was fawning over Rassie in the article earlier this week.

Not sure about his thinking abilities, but he did know how to break a line. Lets hope he knows how to teach that.

Maybe he should start a diet plan for Sireli “I carry a piano on my back (and a pillow under my jersey)” Naqalivuki

  • if he’s as overrated a coach as he was a player, I see Province taking a further step backwards this year… what’s next? Losing to the Leopards?

A little bit like those other Province “legends” de Wet Barry and Marius Joubert.

Baldrick that game was played in Wellington. Last year after the Boland / Sharks game I saw Deon Kayser at the ground and automatically thought back to that scene. If I remember correctly the Sharks won that game because of that tackle.
