Saracens Director of Rugby Brendan Venter has added a ‘world class’ signing to his squad for next season with the news that hooker Schalk Brits will join the London club.
Rugbyweek reports that Brits, 27, joins Sarries from Super 14 outfit The Stormers and the livewire South African international adds significant strength in depth to the club’s forward pack.
Standing at 5ft 10in and weighing in at 15st 7lbs, Brits will play alongside some of his new team mates and also come face to face with Saracens and England captain Steve Borthwick after being named in the Barbarians squad to face England at Twickenham on May 30 and Australia in Sydney a week later.
A regular in the Super 14 for the Stormers and also with Western Province in the Currie Cup, Brits made his Springbok debut last summer as a replacement against Italy before featuring in the TriNations against New Zealand and Australia.
Director of Rugby Venter is delighted to have beaten off competition from a number of other European clubs to capture his signature.
Venter said: “Schalk is a world class player right in his prime, and he has the X-factor that can turn a game in an instant.”
“He has fantastic skills it’s no surprise that many major European clubs have been trying to sign him.
“We are delighted he has chosen to play his rugby at Saracens.”
