After successful negotiations, promising 23-year-old Cheetahs lock Flip van der Merwe has signed with the Bulls and will join up with the team prior to the Currie Cup.
Rugby 365 reports that Van der Merwe, who signed until the end of October 2010, is a product of Grey College (Bloemfontein) and after studying B.Com at the University of the Free State he made his Currie Cup debut for the Cheetahs in 2006.
Van der Merwe has been identified as the man who can take over Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw’s role in the future and with his 120kg / 1.99m frame he will slot in perfectly with the Bulls.
Van der Merwe, who is a former SA Schools and SA Under 19 lock, has been playing Super Rugby and Vodacom Cup rugby for the Cheetahs since 2008 and says he is very excited about the prospect of playing for the Bulls.
“I can’t wait to join the Bulls and I am convinced that my playing style will fit into the Bulls’ game plan. I am a specialist four lock and I see myself as a forward in the traditional mold,” he said.
“It is a huge honour to play and train with guys like Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Danie Rossouw and I am sure a will learn a lot under their leadership.”Tweet
