This is it! The Bulls travel to Durban to wrap up the round robin stage of the 2009 Super 14.

There are still several permutations that can determine the final standings of these two teams.

For the Bulls (42):
A win, with or without a BP, will see them in 1st, on 46 or 47 points.
A draw with a try BP will see them in 2nd, courtesy of a worse PD on 45 points.
A draw without a BP and a loss with 2 BPs will see them in 3rd on 44points
A loss with 1 BP or without a BP will see them in 3rd on 43 or 42 points.

For the Sharks (36):
A win with a BP will see them in 4th, on 41 points, the only option that sees them qualify for the play-offs.
A win without a BP, a draw, with or without a BP or a loss with 2 BPs, will see them in 6th on 40, 39 or 38 points.
A loss, with or without a BP will see them in 7th on 37 or 8th on 36 points.

Will that Sharks rise to the occasion?

Or will the Bulls seize the opportunity and set themselves up for a home final?

He is able to do pull-ups with a 50kg weight between his legs. He can launch his 108kg body 1.4m onto a raised platform, sprints for 835m before slowing on a repeated sprint-ability test and has a body-fat percentage of 6.5.

Dissapointed that u could not play like this a few weeks before, but I knew you could get the bonus!!!

  • Firstly, I’ll use my comment from another site about tonight’s game –

“I applaud the Sharks effort …… now that is how a Sharks team plays. Well done for giving it your all As for the Bully Boys … I sincerely hope you see your arses next weekend against whoever it is …… spoiling tactics and foul play won you this game and you know it ….. my support will be for your opposition.

Sharks, see ya in the CC final again huh.

Now onto the second part –

I lurked this site for yonks, a really really long and when I finally decide to register and take part, it comes to light that there really are quite a few negative wankers here that just spoil the experience of being a Sharks fan. So, in a way thanks to them, I shall disappear from here again …… hopefully one day they’ll just bugger off and this can be the nice place it used to be.

    Adios

If they played like that, 31-6 would maybe not have haPPened- and the log might have lOOked diFFerently.

Two SA teams traveLLing is a weaker option than the buLLs securing the right to play @beloftus as long as they are in the competition.

  • You know, as much as I hate the Bulls, I have to give them respect for the season they played. No big pre-season hype, no big talking. They just got the job done, quietly. Maybe I’ve just been in the wrong place and haven’t seen it, well especially not from the bulle fans, but they have seemed like a much more mature bulls team than the one I used to know.

Between the Sharks, Stormers and Bulls, the Bulls talked the talk the least. The Stormers shot their mouths off the most and look where they sit (remember after the CC last year??). We weren’t bad – hell we had the squad for it, but I still think we got a little ahead of ourselves. Especially once we were ‘comfortably’ sitting pretty on top. I can compare it to someone very intelligent, thinking they can just show up for the final exam – sometimes it works but mostly it doesn’t. The Sharks procrastinated.

You could see the Bulls took it game by game. Something which I think we struggled with. We need to stop trying to win every single game, and just go and play some rugby – I really do think we were too focussed on the end result. We need to have aspirations, but we also need to pitch up for each and every game, it is super14 after all.

All I ask is that we don’t talk up the CC. Lets just go and play, let the results come AFTER the game. We have no excuses not to work hard EVERY single weekend. I don’t want to see us defend out of desperation ‘for the win’, I’d rather we attacked, and see what happens.

    Sharks Forever!

  • The game was a great advert for rugby and would have surely gained many converts if they were watching in the first place. The sad part is that the attractiveness and intensity of this game was brought about by the necessity of one of the sides having to win the game and score 4 tries while the other had to at least win the game. This scenario, to a large extent necessitated that the Sharks, at least, had to keep the ball in hand and build the phases. The big challenge now must be to tweak the laws in favour of encouraging ball in hand, as opposed to ball in play, hail Mary rugby.

  • Poor tactics did the Sharks in once again. Just one of the easy 3 pointers in the 1st half would have been enough to win the game (with 4 tries).
That is the problem with the all out running approach, you look great but since the other team normally do just enough you still loose.

No amount of penalties would have helped the Sharks progress without the 4 tries. The first job was to get the 4 tries and that made taking penalties a waste of time until the try bonus point was obtained. Of course its now easy to say what should have been done in hindsight. The first objective was the 4 tries.
Im sure if it was a normal league game the kickable penalties would have been taken and the Sharks would probably have won by 15 olus points and no bonus point.

And as Big Fish says WP play some good rugby – especially without their glory boys, hell they even win a few games.

Easy to say after the fact, but if there is one thing I do agree with Naas on its take the points, then they would have had to score more than twice putting more pressure on them, and you could have snatched victory

He saved a certain try by tackling JP into touch (did well to make it across) and also nailed Beast in full flight. Add to that his try and some safe catches under the high ball…a superb all round game!

There is still plenty of time to score the 4 tries. It is a lot easier to score counter attacking tries against a team that is desperate to win the game!

    @Villie (Comment 370) :
I’m with the coach and the captain on this one. Its damn hard enough to get within striking distance to score tries to effectively give the ball back to the opposition to come and play in your half of the field.

I would have rather lost the game this way than have won it but only have had 2 tries in the bag.

And if that were the case I can imagine the rantings that the team would have had to put uo with, including from Naas and Joel.

  • @Whindy (Comment 375) : Habana and JP will be first choice wingers but I suspect Nokwe will be one of the backups.

Agree that he is a bit suspect on defence, as shown on Sat when he allowed Joe Peterson to run through him. He also doesn’t have the best hands. Having said that, he has improved a lot and is a very exciting runner!

It’s tough trying to decide which is the better player. I always used to think Odwa was the slightly better one…but this season Akona has had the better form. Not much in it at all. Wonder who is quicker?

That is probably the part of his game that needs the most work.

He is however devastating with ball in hand. Damn he is fast!!!

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 377) : At least the Sharks boys made us proud on Sat. You could see the determination in our play and they give it their ALL…can’t ask for more than that. The Bulls to their credit also gave everything and it was a fantastic advert for Super 14 rugby. That third Sharks try must be one of the tries of the season.

I’m seriously impressed with the improvement Sykes has shown this season.

  • @Villie (Comment 378) : He is also super quick, just a touch timid, @robdylan (Comment 376) : That would be intersting, because they are both very safe under the high ball, Stefan blew it in his last two games, he really was poor on Saturday kept drifting across the field leaving his wings with absolutely no room to move

    Agreed.
    @Villie (Comment 380) :
The twins seem to take turns at being good. The first season that Odwa was at the Sharks he was hopeless and Akona was really good. That year when interviewed and asked the question on how to tell the brothers apart, Akona replied “I’m the one that scores the tries”
Odwa has improved massively since then and was really hot last year, Akona has beeen very good this year.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 386) : while Akona was pretty ordinary this year.

Do you think there’s actually only one good one and they switch places every so often to make sure that both continue to stay on contract? Might explain why they play for different unions, because it would be impossible to keep a scam like that going otherwise.

They sure did make me proud and I hope made themselve confident enough to allow the full back to link up with his runners and take the ball wide and not put everything up high. It really was a wonderful game to watch.

My only grumble is that he still gives away too many penalties/free kicks. However can’t complain about his workrate or his willingness to get stuck in.

  • @Whindy (Comment 383) : I actually thought Stefan had a great game. He showed up loads on both attack and defence and even TT couldn’t complain that he kicked the ball too much.

I do recall on one occasion that he needed to straighten the line but continued to drift, leaving Odwa with no room…but that was about the only mistake he made!
