‘Luke deserves Bok jersey’

Heinrich Brüssow deserves to wear the Springboks’ No 6 jersey against the British and Irish Lions if one considers his consistency this year.

And Luke Watson deserves at least a place in the Springbok squad.

That is the view of former Cheetahs coach Peet Kleynhans. Both loose forwards impressed Kleynhans in Saturday’s Super 14 clash at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein. The Stormers won 28-22.

Hendrik Cronje writes for Sport 24 that the match did not produce fireworks, but the battle of the loose forwards was red-hot. It’s difficult to say who won the battle between Brüssow, Juan Smith and Hendro Scholtz of the Cheetahs, and Watson, Pieter Louw and Duane Vermeulen of the Stormers.

The controversial Watson was jeered when he ran on the field and he was clearly also targeted by the Cheetahs player.

“I think Luke played well. He has played better rugby this year than last,” said Kleynhans.

While the Stormers are successfully using Watson as a No 8, Kleynhans believes he should be considered as a No 6 flank by the Springboks.

Kleynhans added that Brüssow had been magnificent. “His strength is his consistency. He performs very well in every game. Even if Schalk Burger is available, Heinrich should be in the starting line-up.

“He played well again on Saturday and did his bit. You know every week what he will offer the side. He is a quality player.”

The Cheetahs are also using Brüssow to pack down at No 8 in the scrums, which shows his utility value.

Kleynhans believes Vermeulen will represent South Africa in future. “He is a strong contender, but his play was not as noticeable as last year. But big things lie ahead,” said Kleynhans.

Vermeulen had a quiet outing on Saturday by his high standards. Kleynhans believes Smith is still the best in his position in South Africa.

“He had a serious injury. He will continue to play good rugby as his confidence returns. He will be excellent behind a strong tight five,” he said.

Scholtz was used mainly as a ball-carrier, while Louw impressed with his lineout play and at the breakdowns

  • ‘Luke deserves Bok jersey’ He probably won’t refer to is as a BOK Jersey though.

He DOES deserve a spot though. He is IMO the best 8 in SA at the moment.

I would still go with Schalk, Juan and Spies as the starting loosies for the Lions tests.

Who will make the bench though?? Kanko or Brussow??

Son LukasX can lOOke in the miRRor and reaLLy have a “king” moment.

    He played weLL on Saturday.

ChEEtahs did not pitch up- not the team that played against the $harks, Crusaders or BuLLs.

That said – the Stormers did not play badky- the 5 five was surely beTTer than the ChEEtah pack

BUT then the newspaper articles on the 2009 chEEtah pack havent bEEn that realistic.

  • One of the highlights of the match was the fierce breakdown battle between Luke Watson and Heinrich Brussow. Watson arguably came out on top, but Erasmus was reluctant to say who he thought was the better player on the day.

Brussow and Watson are fighting it out for a spot in the Springbok side for the upcoming British and Irish Lions Test series. The Bok squad will be announced on Monday June 1.

“I will first have to go and look at the video to decide who had the better game between Luke and Heinrich. I was so involved in the game. But I thought both players had outstanding games,” Erasmus said.

“Heinrich was very good, but I thought Luke had a very good game, just like he had in the previous weeks. It is difficult to say at this stage who had the most turnovers, but I thought that the breakdown point was vigorously contested by both teams. We definitely didn’t come second there.”

The Cheetahs seemed intent to disrupt Watson’s game by niggling him throughout the game. One nasty incident saw Cheetahs captain Juan Smith and No 8 Hendro Scholtz pinning Watson to the ground. The Stormers leader emerged with blood streaming down his face from a cut to his nose.

Asked if he thought Watson had been targeted by the Cheetahs, Erasmus said: “I don’t know if they targeted Luke, but it depends on how a guy handles such things. And if he did it well, then you win the game. If we had to play differently and lose the game.”

“I am not saying that they did target Luke, but if that was their plan, then I don’t think it worked. I am not saying that they did do that. I am just hearing what you are saying. I watched the game live. I don’t look at the videos and replays.”

  • What bugged me about the incident, is the fact that it was 2 against 1, Juan and Hendro must be so proud. And then… not ONE of Luke’s teammates came to help him.
That is what is wrong with WP, no one stands up to this kak and hence why we’re always beaten by the Bulls. All our boys stand back so that their pretty faces don’t get messed up.

You can’t be principled only when it suits you.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : rugby is a team sport.
so i’d say he does not deserve it even if he is the best 8 in the country.
I can’t help thinking that if he was left out altogether we might have seen different stormers.
