The Lions rugby team received a cool reception upon its arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Monday morning to tour South Africa for the first time in 12 years.
Airports Company of SA officials dished out green T-shirts stating “Welcome to Springbok Country” to bystanders at the airport.
SAPA reports that Free Stater Pieter van Rensburg of Kroonstad, who woke up at 03:00, was one of a few fans who arrived to welcome the team.
He brought a Lions jersey to secure signatures and was not disappointed when head coach Ian McGeeghan obliged, followed by his players, who were then whisked away on two buses without speaking to the media.
The team, made up of players from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, is on a ten-match tour which will end in three back-to-back tests against the Springboks.Tweet
