Plenty Sharks in the SA XV Pack

Coach Peter de Villiers has named his South Africa XV to take on a Namibian Invitational XV in Windhoek on Friday evening. John Smit will captain the side from tighthead prop and will have his hands full with powerful Namibian front-ranker (and former Sharks team-mate) Kees Lensing, who now plays for Castres in France.

The Sharks provide six out of the eight starting forwards, with only WP’s Andries Bekker and Free Stater Hein Brüssow there to break up the Sharks pack that did so well in the Super 14. Beast Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis will be at loosehead and hooker respectively, while Johann Muller will wear the number 4 jersey, allowing Bekker to operate in the middle of the lineout. Jean Deysel and Ryan Kankowski complete what may well be the first-choice Bok loose trio in years to come, with the lively Brüssow on the open side.

The Stormers halfbacks, Ricky Januarie and Peter Grant, will start at 9 and 10 respectively, while Meyer Bosman and Morgan Newman are a surprising choice in the centres. Odwa Ndungane is played out of position on the left wing, leaving the right wing spot open for Free State’s Jongi Nokwe. Earl Rose will be at fullback.

De Villiers has opted to stack his bench with experienced Boks, just in case his new combinations fail to find their feet. Juan Smith, Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Adi Jacobs and JP Pietersen will all play off the wood, together with Free State duo Wian du Preez and Adriaan Strauss. Sharks lock Steven Sykes has also been named as part of a 23-man squad.

SA XV- 15 Earl Rose, 14 Jongi Nokwe, 13 Morgan Newman, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Odwa Ndungane, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Heinrich Brussow, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Johann Muller, 3 John Smit (capt), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Wian du Preez, 18 Steven Sykes, 19 Juan Smith, 20 schalk Burger, 21 Jano Vermaak, 22 Jean de Villiers, 23 Adi Jacobs, 24 JP Pietersen.

  • 10. Ek gaan iets in Afrikaans try se…so wees geduldig asb…:-)

Ek will net se (without sounding like a suck up) – julle ouens op hierdie blog is bak!

Ek sal baie eerder hier kom rugby gesels.

As dit nie vir die feit was dat ek my hele lewe ‘n fanatiese Sharks ondersteuner grootgemaak was nie – het ek oorgeslaan Bulle toe. Julle ouens het excellent gees.

Jammer vir die slegte Afrikaans. Ek probeer maar…:-)

  • 14. Magtaig Sharko – jou afrikaans is excellente!

Don’t get me wrong… there are seriously ANOOYINGLY ARROGANT Sharks supporters out there as well.

  • What a terrible centre pairing! I can understand that they are resting Adi and Jean, and that Frans and Jaque Fourie aren’t there, but are you kidding me, those cannot be the next in line centres?

I like Grant at Flyhalf, I think at his age he can grow into the position if Ruan doesn’t cope.

Earl at fullback might work like a dream, might cost us the match!!

Go the Sharks forwards, show em what you got!

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 24): Just as long as he goes cause I have heard he is disruptive behind the scenes as well, as for his potential I admit he does show some, every now and then, but you have to look at all the stuff ups in-between the potential and I reckon he is not worth the trouble. I hear PDV, when he says we have to develop the previously disadvantaged, and I will be first to say go for it, but this guy has had more that his fair share of chances. He will never be reliable enough to play fullback

  • Just looking at the results from the previous tour.

The lions certainly had the measure of almost all of SA, with only ONE of the 9 provincial teams beating them. Will we have a similar situation this year?

Sat 24 May Eastern Province Inv XV 11 – 39 British & Irish Lions Boet Erasmus Stadium
Wed 28 May Border Bulldogs 14 – 18 British & Irish Lions Basil Kenyon Stadium
Sat 31 May Western Province 21 – 38 British & Irish Lions Newlands
Tue 3 Jun Mpumalanga 14 – 64 British & Irish Lions Johann van Riebeeck Stadium
    Sat 7 Jun N-E Transvaal 35 – 30 British & Irish Lions Loftus Versfeld
Wed 11 Jun Golden Lions 14 – 20 British & Irish Lions Ellis Park
    Sat 14 Jun Natal 12 – 42 British & Irish Lions King’s Park
Tue 17 Jun Emerging Springboks 22 – 51 British & Irish Lions Boland Stadium
Sat 21 Jun South Africa 16 – 25 British & Irish Lions Newlands

I see them picking the biggest side they can..which will mean starting places for guys like Mike Phillips (scrumhalf) and Jamie Roberts (inside centre). I also expect Joe Worsley to be included as the “tree cutter” with a brief to nail Schalk Burger, Juan Smith and Pierre Spies before they gain any momentum.

But wouldn’t it be ironic if the Sharks did well without the “stars”…?

Our front row will be damaged – but it will be very interesting to see how the rest of the guys will combine in the backline. Can we tell them that we need 4 tries? Then maybe we’ll be treated to another good game of rugby.

Ok- now I’m looking forward to seeing the “Sharks backup” in action…

(Hint to Rob : You might wanna start cooking up one of those probable Sharks squads – if you haven’t started already).
