Springbok flank Heinrich Brüssow will get a chance to play against the British & Irish Lions after he was named in the Cheetahs squad to face the tourists in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
Rugby 365 reports that Brüssow was one of a few surprise omissions from the Springboks squad announced on Monday. The squad only includes one specialist fetcher in Schalk Burger and Brussöw’s stellar performances in this year’s Super 14 warranted his inclusion. However, Bok coach Peter de Villiers decided not to included the one-Test flank.
Other Cheetahs players who featured against a Namibian XV last weekend were: Meyer Bosman, Wian du Preez and Adriaan Strauss but they have all been omitted from the final Springbok squad.
“It’s unfortunate that they didn’t make it, especially for Heinrich – as he is having a great season,” Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské told Volksblad.
“But it is good for us that they are now in our team.
“It is in honour for all the players chosen to play against the Lions.”
The Cheetahs side features the bulk of the squad that did duty in the Super 14 but they will be without talismanic skipper, Juan Smith, who’s been included in the Bok squad.
Hendro Scholtz, who stood in during Smith’s absence earlier this year, will again lead the side.
