Here we go – the one we’ve all been waiting for!

The Lions have picked a strong side – some say it may even be their shadow test team. Certainly in the centres, the pairing of Welshman Jamie Roberts and the BoD will look to recapture the devastating form that led to a total annihilation of the Golden Lions a week ago.

The Sharks are severely weakened, but have nevertheless managed to name a side that boasts a formiddable tight 5, handy loose trio and a backline with a few experienced heads. Will they be able to pull off a suprise upset?

Teams:

The Sharks: 15 Stefan Terblanche, 14 Chris Jordaan, 13 Andries Strauss, 12 Riaan Swanepoel, 11 Luzuko Vulindlu, 10 Monty Dumond, 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Johann Muller (captain), 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Skipper Badenhorst, 1 Deon Carstens.
Replacements: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Patric Cilliers, 18 Albert van den Berg, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Guy Cronjé, 22 Lwazi Mvovo.

British & Irish Lions: 15 Lee Byrne, 14 Shane Williams, 13 Brian O’Driscoll, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 Luke Fitzgerald , 10 Ronan O’Gara, 9 Mike Phillips, 8 Jamie Heaslip, 7 David Wallace, 6 Tom Croft, 5 Paul O’Connell (captain), 4 Alun-Wyn Jones, 3 Adam Jones, 2 Lee Mears, 1 Gethin Jenkins.
Replacements: 16 Matthew Rees, 17 Phil Vickery, 18 Simon Shaw, 19 Joe Worsley, 20 Mike Blair, 21 Riki Flutey, 22 James Hook.

Date: Wednesday, June 10
Venue: Absa Stadium, Durban
Kick-off: 19.10 (17.10 GMT)
Expected weather: Mostly clear skies and mild. High 24°C, low 15°C. Wind 35km/h
Referee: Jonathan Kaplan (South Africa)
Assistant referee: Wayne Barnes (England), Jaco Peyper (South Africa)
TMO: Shaun Veldsman (South Africa)

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : It drives me mad that he can’t throw. How long has he had to learn. It’s a VITAL aspect of a hookers game.

He is okay in the loose..but you just can’t afford a hooker who can’t throw!

  • @JarsonX (Comment 42) : yeah, I’m afraid you’re right. It’s valiant, but we’re getting no ball whatsoever and you can’t defend like that for 80 minutes. We’ve already lost Swannie. They need to get Rhodes on ASAP to get some more bulk into that back row. Last thing we need is for Deysel to get hurt

  • anyway, if tonight served only two purposes, then I’ll be happy:

    1) to prove that Skipper Badenhorst doesn’t have the basic skills required to play hooker at *any* level
    2) to show that Monty Dumond is not a good enough flyhalf option, even at Currie Cup level.

If I can be greedy, I’ll take two more:
    3) Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes CANNOT start in the same loose trio. Case closed.
    4) Stefan Terblanche is passed it. Not only is he playing like shit, he looks completely disinterested as well.

  • I’ll add a point or two to the above about Skipper and Monty *spit* ….

    1) That Cronje chappy is waaaay to much into the show-off type of rugby (ala Butch in the early years) for my taste. It’s risky and stupid.
    2) Jordaan needs to be left out for a while yet .. he’s just not ready.

Last point – geez but were the officials a wee bit Lions blinded tonight or something  Surely bad officiating like that has to be spoken about now before the Springboks are at the receiving end of those same shameful decisions? Maybe it’s just me ……

    Robbo!

    A few comments:

    1. never argued that. Cant believe its taken this long to discover this pertinent fact. SA has so many good hookers that you need to be seriously talented just to be considered “average”.

    2. Cannot believe he’s the fall-back option.

    3. Shut up. That case is not closed and two of my favourite players. There is simply no substitute for pace and my argument would be that to play them together the Sharks need to play a deeper tighter 5 and not try to emulate the Stormers.

    4. Again shut up. Actually fark right off. The boy has played his heart out for the sharks this year and your comment is an insult to his efforts. He was touted as back-up to Kirchner for the Bok spot. The fact that neither got it is neither here nor there in terms of this argument. That said nobody plays exceptionally week in week out and lets remember he is still dealing with the fact that he didnt crack the nod even though there are no specialist fullbacks selected.
Lets also not forget that this game wasnt lost at fullback and so your criticism takes on even greater skapegoat’esqe proportions.
The man is even older than you Rob – show some respect and some appreciation.

Good on the sharks tonight. Missing half a side and playing against an internation side comprised of four nations I thoguht they acquitted themselves well, especially in defence. The fact that the cheetahs played that much better agaisnt the same side is, well, probably just a reflection on commitment and depth… ;-)

  • It was a mistake to keep the Boks out. It would have been good for them to play a in a tough game under these ruck and maul laws.
It’s going to cost points in the tests.

The more I see of Kockott, the less I like the guy. Very talented but displays a real a-hole personality on the field. I think PdV is correct in ignoring him for now.

  • @robdylan (Comment 95) : Geez Rob, you are harsh on Skipper Badenhorst, that lions front row is one of the best in the world!! I did not see that much improvement when Craig Burden came on.
I also have a problem with McLeod at scrumhalf somebody has got to tell him to clear quicker, he takes two steps before every pass, he is a nice player otherwise. I was very impressed with Guy Cronjé, nice step and not scared to have a go. I am glad you are all starting to agree with me about Steffan, must be difficult to get up when you know you are no longer required at Springbok level and all your mates are there.
Last night did confirm one thing the future looks rosy for the sharks I was impressed with the youngsters. There was no doubt though, the pace was faster, than what they are used to, they were hurried when they first came on. The defense in the first half was amazing, but it took its toll in the second. I would be happy though, the experience those youngsters got out of that, will be invaluable in the months to come.

    Slow down there Robbo…

I thought the boys did okay. Nothing like The Shark-Tank Redemption I was going on about before the match…but there were some positives.

For a depleted team that hasn’t had much practice…they did well to keep the score modest at half time….playing against tough opposition.

So since when does being waxed by B&I Lions mean you’re not good enough for the CC ?

PdV must have been redeemed to a degree as Rory and Stef showed exactly why they were not picked to the boks.

And Monty ain’t flyhalf – would give him a chance as fulback though.

(in case it isn’t obvious – i am angry

  • Definitely a case of one good half of Rugby by the Sharks. And it was the first half.

We need a flyhalf in Durban. Pronto!!!!!! We cannot rely on Ruan for the rest of our lives, and everytime he gets injured we are screwed.

Given the Lions insistance to kick for touch I reckon the half time score flattered the Sharks. They were simply not in this game for a fulle 80 minutes.

I agree with Rob’s pessimism, something is seriously missing in the Sharks camp currently.

With Frans leaving…we’ll be in deeper water…

Len Olivier is a closed book…

And centre? Frans hasn’t left but I’m missing him already.

Craig is not that much better than Skip. The grace period (because of the switch) is now over – I’m expecting a lot more from him now and he is not improving fast enough for my liking.

    Where’s Skholiwe Ndlovu?

A hooker needs to play regularly with his locks in a game situation to build up an understanding in the lineouts, so let’s just say that both have an excuse for not being on song… comparing the other aspects of their game, Burden was streets ahead of Skipper

  • @robdylan (Comment 117) : I agree, Skipper was plain rubbish. Burden needs to now be given the starting berth and develop. Skipper has had his opportunities and he hasn’t shown enough to warrant selection.

I thought the young subs were good, Cronje and McLeod were prominent towards the end, our attack actually looked better, perhaps the game did open up a little.

Thought the scrums were an absolute joke, Kaplan didn’t get it right there. We were killing them.

Overall, this was men against boys, a test team made up entirely of Internationals against one with not a lot of international experience, and some without S14 or even CC experience.

  • Starting, schmarting. Mvovo, Rhodes and Cronje have little experience which is the case with McLeod – didn’t mean age so much as top flight experience – even though I believe he is good, doesn’t have Kockott’s mongrel though.

It all boils down to men against boys, No?

Well, the old SIZE vs ACTIVITY debate again…
Skho looks like a guy who can lift 5 times his weight…at least from what I’ve seen so far. I haven’t seen enough of your new lovechild Justin as well… but yes I agree that we need more STRENGTH in the loosie department. Strength is proportional to size…but it’s not the same thing.

    @robdylan (Comment 117) :
You’d have to really suck to not be better than Skip…but I’m still not comfortable with Craig as our first choice CC hooker. He’s just as untrustworthy in the lineout department – I think they’ve all been attending night school with Bismarck. We deserve more than an average dude who just happens to be better than the worst hooker I can think of.
