Giving the youngsters a chance

The Sharks coaching staff have named an exciting line-up to take on the Pumas in a Currie Cup warmup game in Witbank on Friday evening. Keegan Daniel captains the team from eighthman.

In the front row, Pat Cilliers continues his conversion to loosehead, while Wiehahn Herbst, a former SA age group representative, will operate on the other side of the scrum. Craig Burden gets a rare start at hooker, with the evergreen Skipper Badenhorst on the wood. Another youngster, Dale Chadwick (a shock omission from the SA Under 20 side) will provide cover at prop.

Jandre Marais, fresh from his exploits at the IRB Under 20 championships will partner Albert van den Berg in the second row, while the loose trio has a settled look. Jacques Botes and Jean Deysel are the flanks, with Daniel set to operate in what is, I feel, his best position. Youngsters Nqubeko Zulu and Justin Downey will provide cover at lock and loose forwards respectively. Both were key members of the Sharks XV this year.

There are some interesting choices amongst the backs. Former Bulls winger Rocco Jansen has been named at right wing, together with Lwazi Mvovo, who impressed against the Lions. Andries Strauss and Luzuko Vulindlu are the centres, with Chris Jordaan operating at fullback. Rory Kockott is, of course, the scrumhalf, while in an interesting move, young Guy Cronje appears to have leapfrogged several more experienced contenders to claim the flyhalf shirt. Charl McLeod is joined on the bench by a pair of exciting youngsters, Sevens Bok Ian Adendorff and former Michaelhouse wünderkind Patrick Lambie.

  • Otherwise, I quite like the look of this team. You want to get the guys going with some game time, but you also want to have a look at some youngsters. I reckon they have got the balance right with this selection.

  • Talking about Keo earlier, read htis on Voldy:

But it appears as if De Villiers has been reading keo.co.za. The Bok coach believes that the coverage of Monday’s press conference amounted to a personal attack and doesn’t want his players talking to this website.

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : i was not taking the piss out of ksa. i really dig the guy. he is actually a hero of mine. i would love to be able to travel the world and get time to post 24/7. he has a good life. as i said to you his absence from this site over the past few weeks has really left this site empty. but you have made it clear that a little humour is not accepted. due to my overstepping the line one too many times, i am now resigning try time. he is past his sell by date and has surprisingly survived a long time. rob, you may now put the sword in.
