  • Great hands by the Lions at the moment. Eventually Smit is penalised for not releassing.

    O’Connell educates Dickinson on the laws of the games.

    The ball falls off the tee at the conversion right in front and Jones is charged down. :lol:

    Penalty for holding on. M Steyn puts it over.

  • TRY NGUNGANE!!!

    Slow buildup on the left and middle parts of the field through the forwards. JS drives it up between the posts. Ball comes out and there’s an overlap on the right. Ngungane dots down in the corner. TMO takes ages to see if his boot nicked touch and thinks he does. Bullshit.

Scoreline might well have been a bit different.

    Mind you, Boks were sh!t. Nokwe & Kirchner were rubbish, & Steyn didn’t offer anything more than his 3 placekicks…

    I don’t agree with all…

    Wynand played much better than Div did in both tests…on attack and defense…
    I wonder if Beast is really such a good scrummager or is it really bizzy scrumming on his inside!??! But Chilly should never have been in the group…
    Kirshner is a good player…should have been in the squad from the start and time of the bench…
    Nokwe is only a good finisher if the has to run straight towards an open line…and he is not all that fast it seems…(Habana much better)…
    Odwa cannot finish either…he was 4/5 meters from the touchline and still could not score…we are better off playing JFourie there if we need to…but JPP is good and we need JFourie in the middle…
    Steyn played well…he just needs to speed up his distribution…

  • hehehe, looks like the press knows less about scrummaging than even the average supporter. :lol: If a hooker is driving on the TH, he is scrumming out not in. :grin: Funny thing is they also said that Smit is such a poor TH that he needs Bissy scrumming with him to be able to stand his ground. Now how can Bissy be helping his own TH and attacking the opposing TH at the same time? Just watch any front row bind in preparation for a scum. The bind between the LH and hooker is very tight, with the LH right shoulder under the hooker’s shoulder, the TH bind to the hooker is much looser with the left shoulder of the TH alongside the hooker’s shoulder. The Boks always bind like this, even in the first test first 20 minutes. It is next to impossible for the hooker to drive on the opposing TH with this bind. Now look how Vickery was dismantled in the first test. The Lions started with a very small hooker, both short and not particularly strong. Vickery, being the experienced and wily TH he is, realized this and knew he had to support his hooker and was always driving inward, just watch the scrums. Now the problem for Vickery is this exposes his ribs and chest to the opposition LH, and in the case of a shorter LH like Beast, he is able to get under Vickery’s ribs and drive him back and up. Just watch the penultimate scrum where Vickery was dumped. Vickery starts to drive in (which is illegal by the way), exposes his right ribs, Beast drives from a low position, gets his head under Vickery’s chest, and left shoulder into Vickery’s right ribs. Beast then drives up and straight back. Vickery’s drive is angled inwards, and against a strong drive from a low position straight back, he has little resistance. Just watch Vickery, he is turned completely sideways, and then he has no resistance to the LH, game over. So bottom line is that Vickery was dismantled in the scrum because the Lions had a small, poor scrummaging hooker, and Vickery being the old campaigner he is knew this and had to support him which exposed him to the LH. Beast being the naturally strong guy he is, with a huge appetite for knowledge of rugby has learned his lessons well, and used this against Vickery. My honest opinion is that Steenkamp is not an attacking LH, he is willing to hold his side of the scrum up and hold his own, which is OK, but he would have not attacked Vickery’s ribs when they were exposed like the Beast did. Also, Os might have had more trouble because I believe he was taller than Beast and a taller LH would have had trouble getting under Vickery.

    There my analysis for what it is worth, but clearly different than the British press if they are saying that Bissy was attacking Vickery, that is just not correct.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 187) : It is no coincidence that when the Hooker came off for Rees (I believe) the Lions scrum was better for the remainder of the series. I don’t believe that little hooker saw any more game time in the tests after that first 60 minutes in the first test. For all we want to say about the Lion’s management, they are not stupid, and realized this same thing since we never saw the same Hooker scrumming again in a test.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 188) : excellent analysis and spot on. I saw a little-read article on Rugby365 after the first test that backs you up on this.

    Thanks for a very interesting explanation.

    If you have some time for an article, that would be great.

  • I would be happy to put thoughts in an article and send to Rob, he can decide if it is worth posting or not. :grin:

    Another interesting thing I remember from the first test, is fairly early in the second half, the Boks had a scrum inside their own 22. The initial view appeared that the Bok scrum had fractured and the commentators mentioned that the Bok scrum had finally been beaten by the Lions. Spies took the ball to the right, gained about 8 metres, set up a strong ruck and Pienaar cleared to touch over the half way line. They showed a replay of the scrum from behind the Boks, it was really informative replay although none of the commentators noticed. Bakkies completely relaxed his bind on Victor and changed his angle driving directly on Smit, not at all on Bissy, and Victor actually took a step back. Smit drove about a metre forward, and Spies picked the ball up moving forward to the right. It was clearly rehearsed and performed to perfection, but it really looked like the scrum had fractured. Of course, both locks were already un-bound so hit the following ruck hard and we had so many more numbers protecting the ball than the Lions had. Very clever play, but if you listened to the commentators, the scrum was beaten, and Spies saved the day by making something out of nothing. Rather it was Bakkies and Smit giving him the go forward and the rest of the pack supporting him at the tackle point that made it such an effective way to clear the ball.

  • :lol: Jislaaik I am long winded today. Should be training on the boat today, but the wind is saying otherwise, so I have been watching the tests again with special emphasis on watching the scrums.

    Oh, one more thing, just tallying up the amount of work being put in around the field, my goodness, but Beast is more active than all the loosies and Bissy. He is everywhere, I wish I had counted tackles because he seems to be in on every tackle, and every few minutes of play makes a superb tackle alone. Always a threat to carry around the fringes, and he has become fantastic at protecting the ball now (a weakness I felt he had in the past). Truly amazing, he honestly plays like a loose forward around the pitch. I don’t see him attacking for turnovers very often, but always there in the mix. Also always seems to be one of the first supporters hitting rucks and mauls. How lucky the Sharks and Boks are to have this guy. For him to be as proficient as he is in the scrums at the international level, and combined with his loose forward background, he is going to be a truly special player for a very long time to come. I already forget how young he is.

  • OK, so I have some questions for those that are more knowledgeable than I am about the performance of the back (just about everyone). It seemed to me and my very limited front row brain, that M. Steyn and WO are both very solid rugby players, but seem to lack variety of any sort. They do what they do very well, but at the international level appear predictable. Probably excellent backups but I just feel that Pienaar and PdV offer so much more variety on attack. M. Steyn has an incredible boot, both for distance and accuracy, and he does not make mistakes. OK fine, then why is it we never saw him chip over the rush defence the way Pienaar did in the first test. Pienaar was able to keep the Boks out of trouble by finding space behind the fast moving rush defence, yet Steyn’s kicks seemed to be at players rather than space and never seemed to employ the chip over the top or cross kick. Remember the two tries in NZ where Pienaar chipped over the rush defence and JPP had easy run ins. Am I wrong here? J. Fourie is an excellent rugby player and the Boks are lucky to have him.

    As for fullback, clearly F. Steyn is a step ahead of Kirchner, he definitely stepped it up a level when he came on, but Kirchner was solid and did not let his team down (generally). I have said for a long time that Steyn’s best position would be FB, but what do I know, I’m just an old front rower. :lol:

    Wings, sorry, but Nokwe is a WOFTAM (waste of f…ing time and money) three of his bok tries were easy run ins after being set up by Odwa coming across from the other wing. Clearly we have two very special wings in Habana and JPP although Habana is becoming a bit too unpredictable. But, my opinion is that if the Boks are to carry two extra wings, they should be both Ndungane’s. Both are very hard workers, strong in defence, strong under the high ball, and although not the fastest wings in the world are good finishers. And don’t forget that Odders offers strong backup at FB if needed.

    There my opinions on backliine, worth every penny you paid for them. OK, now those that actually know something, please tell me where I am wrong.

    I am really glad PdV chose to give all players a chance to play the Lions, and I think he learned something from it. I think he realizes Nokwe is worthless and is why he was replaced by Spies. Interesting that since PdV’s defence of Januarie, we have seen nothing of pie eating champ. In fact he was the only player seemingly left out in the cold after the last test. And with Pienaar being given some game time at 9, makes me think that PdV might just drop Rikki Tikki and just have Pienaar as backup. FdP should play 90 minutes if possible anyway.

    Ha ha …nice comeback there…

    @Dancing Bear (Comment 192) :
    Beast is a monster – and yet the British media will tell you that the Lions tamed him…crazy fools.

    @Dancing Bear (Comment 193) :
    I believe the last test removed any doubts that PdV (and the rest of us) had…as far as the starting 15 is concerned …

  • scrumming will always be about the tight five as a combination and never about the individual props. Problem is, 99% of the punters out there really just couldn’t be bothered to look at it at that level of detail.
