Hey guys – the Currie Cup kicks off this weekend. Here are a few snippets of news.
As usual, there’s a huge amount of horse-trading going on behind the scenes. Latest news is that Free State utility back Alwyn Hollenbach has joined the flood of disenchanted wannabes on their way to the Coke Tin. That’s right, Hollenbach will be a Lion in this year’s Currie Cup and has apparently been promised gametime in the number 15 jersey, vacated by the unlucky Louis Ludick, who broke his leg against the Lions (how’s that for alliteration?).
A pair of Sharks fringe players are off as well – both Danie Dames and Thabo Mamojele will be on loan to the Leopards this time around. Dames is himself a product of Potchefstroom, so for him it will be a bit of a homecoming. Mamojele is becoming something of a loan specialist (is that a loan shark?) as you may recall he played for the Valke last year under similar circumstances.
Some really good news, given how thin the second row is looking, is that both Johann Muller and Steven Sykes will probably be available to the Sharks this weekend. Coming up against a Province second row that’s likely to include the wiley Chris Jack, it’s good to know that we’ll have some experienced campaigners there – and not quite as experienced as Oom Bert from the mountain!
That’s it for now – will update you as more news unfolds.Tweet
