Well folks, here it is! Since there is no official announcement of the Sharks Currie Cup squad, I decided to make one up. I’m not sure if it’s right, but who knows, it just might be!

So, the big unknowns are, of course, Springbok call ups. We know who’s currently in the Bok squad, but the talk is that some of those players will be released, at least for a round or two before the Tri-Nations kicks off in in earnest. We’ll have all of those names back in time for the closing stages of the competition, but they won’t help us early on. So, let’s have a look at what we have in each position, starting from 1 and moving back.

1) Beast Mtawarira (Boks), Deon Carstens (Boks), Pat Cilliers, Sabelo Nhlapo. Barra Mthethwa is a long-term injury casualty.
2) Bismarck du Plessis (Boks), Craig Burden, Skipper Badenhorst.
3) John Smit (Boks), Jannie du Plessis, Wiehahn Herbst.
4) Steven Sykes (Boks), Jandre Marais, Nikolai Blignaut. Mike Rhodes will be considered, but is currently injured.
5) Johann Muller (Boks), Albert van den Berg. Alistair Hargreaves is currently injured.
6) Jacques Botes. Skollie Ndlovu is currently injured.
7) Jean Deysel, Justin Downey.
8) Ryan Kankowski (Boks), Keegan Daniel, Warren Whiteley.
9) Rory Kockott, Charl McLeod, Ross Cronje.
10) Ruan Pienaar(Boks), Guy Cronje, Monty Dumond, Len Olivier
11) JP Pietersen (Boks), Lwazi Mvovo
12) Riaan Swanepoel, Andries Strauss
13) Adi Jacobs (Boks), Zuks Vulindlu, Ian Addendorf. Waylon Murray may or may not still be injured.
14) Odwa Ndungane (Boks), Rocco Jansen
15) Stefan Terblanche, Chris Jordaan, Patrick Lambie

There we go. Let me know if I’ve left anyone out.

Pretty much the same story as in the Super 14. Our first team looks fine, but we’re going to struggle while the Boks are away!

  • Does Mike Rhodes cover loose forward as well?

Looking quite thin at 10, 12 and 15. Peter Grant, anyone?

  • well lets see how stefan fairs. is it going to be “i can kick the up en unner” stefan, or the “i can run wif de ball” stefan. if it is the latter the sharks have a chance, but if he resorts to his s14 style of play, the sharks are going to get whipped. he and rory are key to our backline firing. both wasted a lot of ball during the s14, lets see if they can repair the damage.

Bru, if you watched the first 2 tests against the Lions you would have noticed Frans Steyn also kicked loads of up and unders.

Maybe, just maybe Stefan is playing according to his coach’s instructions. Ever thought about that???

Sheesh!!! Lay off the guy will you!!

  • we will need to play an attacking game this year, since we no longer have a great defensive set of backs. Stefan’s approach will be key. I feel he was playing to orders in the Super 14

  • Well, if Muller gets the Boks call and Albert gets injured will they allow uncontested Line outs ’cause we don’t have enough locks?

  • @wpw (Comment 5) : i didn’t say stop the up and unders, i said cut two thirds of them. frans also made a lot of runs. it is about not being predictable and stefan is very predictable. keep the opposition guessing. also if the ball is in the oppositions hands we have to tire ourselves defending. let the opposition defend. i know you want stefan to kick to give your team a chance.

  • @Prof. Ice (Comment 75) : no its not the boobs. marriage kills the wife’s boob effect. the wife resorts to fear tactics when the ring gets put on the finger. didn’t you understand the basic meaning of lord of the rings. it is all about the evil created when the ring was put on a woman’s finger and how the husband has to go through hell to free himself.

  • ‘The Sharks have several fringe Bok squad members who will face WP on Saturday. Steven Sykes, Johann Muller, Odwa Ndungane, Ryan Kankowski and Deon Carstens are not first-choice Springboks, so they need game time and would want to impress the national selectors ahead of the Tri-Nations.’
