The elevation of Wiehahn Herbst and Ross Cronjé to the Currie Cup bench have forced a reshuffle in the Sharks under 21 side for tomorrow’s game against Boland. Like their senior counterparts, the youngsters will need a good win to get back on track after coming unstuck against Western Province last weekend.
Baby Bok tighthead Julian Redelinghuys comes into the number 3 jersey in place of Herbst, while there’s a switch on the other side of the scrum too. Dale Chadwick, unlucky to miss out on selection for the SA juniors, takes over from Sabs Nhlapo at loosehead, with the big former lock dropping to the bench. Kyle Cooper, Jandré Marais and Anton Bresler complete the tight five, as they did last week.
There’s a further change at blind side flank. Siya Mdaka picked up a mild concussion last week and his place at the side of the scrum goes to former Paul Roos schoolboy Lambert Groenewald. Nic Claasen, who played a lot of rugby for the Sharks XV and Meyer Swanepoel complete the loose trio.
Alex Kock takes over at scrumhalf in an otherwise unchanged backline. The team will again be lead by flyhalf Tian Meyer. New faces on the bench this week are Cameron Dunlop, Faizel de Bruyn and George Tossel. De Bruin is another who came within a whisker of making the SA Under 20 side for the IRB World Championship in Japan. Tossel is a young flyhalf who, at 1.91m and 106kg, makes Frans Steyn look like a dwarf.

anyone going to see this game?
hey, am I the only one wondering why jandre marais is not being considered for the senior side?
@war1 (Comment 2) : I doubt he can be far off, to be honest.
I reckon it’s last chance saloon for Nik Blignaut now… he’s been in and around the senior side for 3 years now and had delivered no value.
“Tossel is a young flyhalf who, at 1.91m and 106kg, makes Frans Steyn look like a dwarf.”….Bliksem, are you sure those numbers and position are correct?
@robdylan (Comment 3) : yeah, i’m glad he is there, we do have a little bit of lock depth, hope he gets a good chance, we need to develop players like him, or we might lose him
@Salmonoid (Comment 4) : well, as far as I know they are… trying to get more information, as always
@war1 (Comment 5) : you mean Marais? Yeah… he has a younger brother in the system as well
@Salmonoid (Comment 4) : it turns out he is most definitely that size. He is in the squad as a utility back, covering centre and fullback, but he played a fair bit of rugger at flyhalf in the Northern hemisphere earlier this year.
@robdylan (Comment 8) : in fact, I might be wrong… sounds like he played a fair bit at centre, but did all the goalkicking when with West Park club up in Leeds.
Also received LOTS of yellow cards
go read this…

kind of weird… West Park St Helens had no fewer than 3 Sharks Juniors in their side this year. There must be some sort of loan arrangement in place
@robdylan (Comment 7) : yeah, i mean marais, any other decent locks in the academy? and what position does his brother play?
@robdylan (Comment 11) : good exposure for the guys, might help if/when they make s14 side, then they know how to handle nz conditions
@robdylan (Comment 10) :
Scored 2 tries and kicked the winning goal, sounds promising.
@war1 (Comment 12) : also lock.
Anton Bresler and Kene Okafor are also pretty useful
@Salmonoid (Comment 14) : it do indeed
@robdylan (Comment 15) : nice, i used to play lock in my high school days, so i have a bit of a bias towards players who play lock
@war1 (Comment 17) : I also did… it was great when I was 13 and 6 foot tall. Not so great when I was 17 and still only 6 foot
@robdylan (Comment 18) :
Shutup Rob – you’re not six foot!
Maybe if you grew a really big fro… oops I did it again…
@VinChainSaw (Comment 19) : I’m 5 foot 11… ok, so I added an inch.
Like you’ve never done that…
@robdylan (Comment 18) : yeah, i played for an english school not well-known for its rugby, although john smit apparently played a match for us, the story goes that the team were short a player, so go ol smittie helped us out, not sure how true this is, but he is originally from rustenburg, so . .
@war1 (Comment 21) : that should be good ol’ smittie
@war1 (Comment 22) : what school? I played with Smittie at Pretoria Boys
KWA-ZULU NATAL 23 SA ACADEMY 0
E PROVINCE CD 25 BOLAND 18
@Salmonoid (Comment 24) :
Craven week.
@Salmonoid (Comment 24) : Why you shouting?
because nobody seems to be listening to me.
@Salmonoid (Comment 27) : say what?
@Salmonoid (Comment 24) : oh nice work!
@robdylan (Comment 23) : grenville high school in rustenburg, dont expect anyone to know about it tho
@war1 (Comment 30) : can’t say I’ve heard of that one, no…
@robdylan (Comment 31) : no worries, like i said, did not expect anyone to know it, dont think they even have rugby there anymore
Rosco Specman?
@Villie (Comment 33) : you know the name?
BTW – sorry for my abrupt text message the other day… I was multitasking furiously and trying to do about 4 things at once!
@robdylan (Comment 34) Nah…don’t actually….just thought it sounded rather comical.
My Dad will be at the U21 game so I will try and get his opinion, see who had good games etc.
If I move back to Durban next year, I will attend all games so will be able to provide reports!
@Villie (Comment 35) : GO! What are you waiting for
I’m particularly interested in this Tossel chap… sounds like he might be dynamite. Oh and Lambie of course
@robdylan (Comment 36) : Tossel, what a funny name, i wonder if he has long hair
@Salmonoid (Comment 27) :
get boobs like TT…
@JarsonX (Insomniac) (Comment 37) :
Lets HOPE it is because of long hair!
@Prof. Ice (Comment 38) :
That would help, problem with TT’s (hey that sounds like tieties) boobs is that I associate them with you and think its you commenting.
They will be showing the under 21 game at 21.00, after the Sharks game on SS7.
@Salmonoid (Comment 40) :
I wil NEVEr talk so much nonsense!
@Prof. Ice (Comment 39) : I don’t get it…
@Salmonoid (Comment 41) : It will be a good game, I hope
@robdylan (Comment 43) :
It’s Okay Rob, we know you are a bit slow, but we still love you!!
@Prof. Ice (Comment 45) : kind of you!
@robdylan (Comment 46) : Million thank you’s for the ‘tips’. Works like a charm.
@McLovin (Comment 47) : nice – that’s 3/3
And a big “up yours” to WS
@robdylan (Comment 48) : Ooh yes.
@McLovin (Comment 49) : it might not work forever… they’ll probably catch on at some stage. I think I need to change that page to make the wording a little more innocuous-seeming
ok – stage 2 is complete…
McL… will you let me know if you see any references to the dreaded “P” word anywhere on that site?
Kick-off time for this game?
@blackshark (Comment 52) : kick-off is 5pm
@robdylan (Comment 51) : What P word? What site?
Have I slipped into a parallel universe without realising?
@robdylan (Comment 51) : Starts with P ends with roxy?
@McLovin (Comment 56) : correctamundo
