All unconfirmed rumours at this stage, but a report on Sport24 has it on good authority that “The best 13 in the world” will join Western Province next year.
Jaque Fourie is the subject of a serious tug-of-war at the moment. Clermont-Auvergne have already confirmed his signature, but you know how these French clubs like to jump the gun with their announcements! SARU have offered him a Bok contract through 2011, which looks to have tipped the scales in favour of Fourie staying in SA. He’s now looking for a top provincial contract to supplement his Bok earnings.
The Lions, of course, are hugely keen to retain their marquee player but it looks like Fourie has had enough of their shenanigans and wants to move elsewhere in SA. The Blue Bulls and Sharks have (predictably) made offers, but the Sport24 article claims to have “reliably learned” from an “impeccable source” that Western Province have won the race for Mossie’s prized signature.
The same article links Bulls centre Wynand Olivier with a move to Province, but based on my reading of it, that seems speculative at best. An article yesterday suggested that former Bulls flyhalf Derick “Liefling” Hougaardt may also return to South Africa next year, with Western Province again being his preferred destination.
