Centres moving all over the show

All unconfirmed rumours at this stage, but a report on Sport24 has it on good authority that “The best 13 in the world” will join Western Province next year.

Jaque Fourie is the subject of a serious tug-of-war at the moment. Clermont-Auvergne have already confirmed his signature, but you know how these French clubs like to jump the gun with their announcements! SARU have offered him a Bok contract through 2011, which looks to have tipped the scales in favour of Fourie staying in SA. He’s now looking for a top provincial contract to supplement his Bok earnings.

The Lions, of course, are hugely keen to retain their marquee player but it looks like Fourie has had enough of their shenanigans and wants to move elsewhere in SA. The Blue Bulls and Sharks have (predictably) made offers, but the Sport24 article claims to have “reliably learned” from an “impeccable source” that Western Province have won the race for Mossie’s prized signature.

The same article links Bulls centre Wynand Olivier with a move to Province, but based on my reading of it, that seems speculative at best. An article yesterday suggested that former Bulls flyhalf Derick “Liefling” Hougaardt may also return to South Africa next year, with Western Province again being his preferred destination.

More on these stories as they develop.

The article was on the depleted depth at the Sharks and then it said that Fourie was in negotiations with the Sharks and JDV was reviewing offers from Sharks and Munster. Or it could have been in the Witness on Mon  Let me quickly google it and I will confirm with you.

The player who has been keeping ‘the best outside center in the world’ out of the Bok side just happens to be in Durbs.

Rob I will have to go home to check it out properly I am sorry, but I remember my son and I were ecstatic!

  • This is what Jacques has said in Super sport: “…I have spoken to Jake (White) and the Lions, and they are keen for me to stay, but I haven’t got an offer from them yet.”

It was when he was asked if being relegated in the Springbok midfield pecking order behind Adrian Jacobs had played a role in his decision to look at overseas options that Fourie made it clear that his decision on his future will not just be dictated by rugby considerations.

“I feel I am the best outside centre in the world, so it would not be about that (losing his place to Jacobs). It is just that I have played six or seven seasons in top rugby in South Africa now, and would like to broaden my horizons.

“I have also just been married and would really like to live with my wife every day, rather than be travelling all the time like you do when you play here. I am not keen to be away from her for another six weeks now, and the travelling and the time you spend away does take a big toll on your relationships.”

Several players who have moved from the south to the northern hemisphere have spoken about the better quality of life offered in the UK and France, where if there is any travel it is usually just overnight or for a weekend.

Apart from the month the Boks spend away during the Tri-Nations season, they also spend another four to five weeks in Australia and New Zealand during the Super 14 season.

“I am very keen to start a family, and there is life other than rugby, so I have to weigh a lifestyle choice up against a rugby one. I am 26 now, which means I have another five or so years left in the game.”

And if anyone has seen his wife they would not be too surprised to the reasons he wants to stay home

Also a big reason why we do loose so many to overseas clubs – but I guess its part and parcel of the Porfessional Era..

Adi goes inside seeing that his pace will go fade away in the coming years. Hernandez to take over from stef. That will be a great backline to challenge for super 14 next year! Sharks to pull it through this evening, swanepoel,Deysel and Burden to play biggest roles

  • @war1 (Comment 156) : They might have some class new signings, but i think it will take them a while to become a team. Also they hav way too many forwards and not enough backline players. Makes no sense. My money is on arsenal to hav a good go this season if they don’t get too many injuries.

If they retain their players for next season i think they will start to come into their own! Be Patient…i had to do it a few years back with the Sharks.

  • @Rahul (Comment 168) : Arsenal play the right type of footbal to rack up quite alot of wins, also depends on the tightness of their defence, but yes arsenal will do guud. Walcott, arshavin, eduardo, etc will be key. If those guys are on form arsenals attack is deadly!
