The farce continues

Well, guys, I’m starting to get just a little the hell in with SARU’s citing and disciplinary process. It is a complete shambles and a farce with absolutely no consistency and seemingly zero governance. Like so many of the other things that the national body does, it brings to mind the image of a swaggering bully throwing its weight around, rather than a professional, multi-million Rand enterprise.

For the second time in a week, a disciplinary hearing has been summarily postponed at the last minute, without any prior warning or justification. Furthermore, no consideration whatsoever has been given to the impact that these hearings have on team selection and preparation for upcoming matches. Last week, it was Guy Cronjé whose utter debacle of a hearing took place a single day before the game. This time around, Rory Kockott’s hearing, for an incident which nobody can find ANY video evidence of, has been postponed until 09h00 this morning. Again, assuming that Kockott is suspended, it will necessitate a team change the day before an important match (given that the players typically have Wednesdays off).

A little birdy tells me that the victim of Kockott’s alleged indiscretion, Bulls lock Wilhelm Steenkamp, has no recollection of the incident whatsoever. Kind of makes one wonder if they’ve been forced to postpone the hearing in the vain hope that a single shred of evidence may, in fact, miraculously prevent itself, since the case as it stands now appears flimsy to the point of absurdity. Maybe there wasn’t actually such an incident after all – or perhaps one of the Bulls coaches happened to mention something at the post match drinks function which the citing commissioner decided to act on? Who knows, but it all smacks of a total lack of transparency and professionalism.

Raise your game, SARU and drop your petty agenda against the Sharks. It’s bad enough that your officials on the day saw fit to issue at least two unwarranted cards. The Kockott witch hunt is nothing more than a stitch up and I hope you end up with egg all over your faces.

  • Surely they can pre-arrange a time and place for all potential hearings when they do the fixture list at the start of the season. If no citings take place then simply cancel the hearing.

And if the hearing doesn’t take place X amount of time before the next match then it’s too late and all charges dropped.

  • Two other incidents from the game bear recall. Firstly, Albert’s apparent elbow charge which he has no recall of either. If indeed it happened and there was TV evidence, he would have been cited as well.

Secondly, Bote’s yellow card for a sharp shoulder. This is what Bakkie Botha was suspended for, so why not cite Botes?

    Because all three are non-incidents.

This sanitising of the game is becoming a total joke. I bet if I had a PVR recorder, I could go through every game and cite at least 2 players each game.

The sad thing is that these citings and cards come off absolutely no evidence to suggest they actually happened.

Stop the bus, I’m off to the ballet shop to buy a tutu and go play tiddliwinks.

  • Think the blatant targeting of the Sharks in recent weeks is something to do with pressuring a move to the new stadium? I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but there does seem to be an agenda. That or hopeless incompetence. I wouldn’t rule out both.

  • Amen Rob, i have been thinking exactly the same , like i said with guy’s citing and moving it till the thursday for the hearing , is a damn disgrace, this week again the same thing.

it seems very clear that there is an agenda behind this

But is it not also time the Sharks management stood by their players???

  • @MerckZ (Comment 9) : maybe the sharks should consider their offer to join the nh teams in their competitions. it may mean they get cut off from saru, but they would probably earn more dolleros. it will also bring something fresh into sa rugby.

  • @robdylan (Comment 17) : is that a bad thing. i am sure sharks could find better competitions to join, offering more than the current one does. imagine bulls and stormers supporters flying to durban to watch the sharks take on the ospreys. if saru doesn’t boycott the sharks they could use the sharks to judge the form of overseas based players, thus strengthening the boks depth.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 20) : i know, but maybe forcing hands is the only way we can clean up the mess that was created by bringing an amateur institution into a professional era. saru is still stuck in its old union ways and egos tend to get in the way of common sense. the sharks are a dynamic enough side to take the gamble of breaking away. remember 90% of sharks supporters don’t live in durban. that is why it is a battle to fill the stadium on friday nights, so why not offer the sa public something more. why must we follow the old fools that keep dragging rugby in this country down. for example who really scored in the 2011 s14 expansion. once again it wasn’t sa rugby. yet the unions follow blindly the stupidity of saru. i will support the team that has the balls to say enough is enough.

think of all the south africans in the uk that will convert to be sharks supporters cos they have a team to identify with over there. and expats have a lot more money to buy overpriced sharks gear.

does my idea sound that looney now. it is extreme though.

  • actually whindy asked yesterday where could the lions move to. they have very few boks in their team, so for them a move like this would not be that drastic. it will also bring back old fans that became sharks supporters because of the bungling. the team that takes the big step i reckon will be the team that will score in the long run. every year saru drags rugby to a new low, imagine getting rid of that weight. and re contract with them when the ball is your court.
