The Blue Bulls redeemed themselves from their loss last Friday at the hands of the Sharks with a thorough 50-18 beating of the Boland Cavaliers in their Currie Cup match played at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.

The Bulls ran in seven tries as opposed to the two late tries scored for the visitors by substitutes Lionel Corelius and Ernie Kruger.

This was Boland’s second heavy defeat in as many weeks after they set the highest score in this year’s Currie Cup when they went down 80-7 against Griquas last week.

Boland might have feared that the same would happen against the Bulls but some resolute defence in the second half and the Bulls’ lack of cohesion from the start managed to limit the Bulls to just 50 points.

The Bulls opened their marathon of points with a Francois Brummer penalty in the fourth minute before Boland levelled matters three minutes later with a penalty from Elgar Watts.

The hosts could have come out of the blocks quicker had they been patient in their build-ups, but their first try came from first phase ball when Dries van Schalkwyk peeled off the scrum, passed to Heini Adams who threw a quick pass to wing Gerhard van den Heever to score.

Jaco Pretorius extended the Bulls’ lead in the 23rd minute before Van den Heever finished off his brace for the night with a try in the same corner which he scored his first try.

In the second half the Bulls seemed to get some momentum early on and lock Flip van der Merwe rumbled his way over the line to score the bonus point try for the Bulls.

Watts managed to grab another penalty for Boland before Bulls prop Gurthro Steenkamp crashed over in the 48th minute and Jacques Burger grabbed his try in identical fashion on the hour mark.

In the dying moments of the game Boland’s unrelenting efforts on the night paid off as they were gifted two long range tries by the Bulls who forfeited the ball on the Bpoland try-line.

First it was Corelius to cross over after a counter attack and then Kruger finished off.
