El Mago starts at flyhalf

New recruit Juan Martin Hernández will start at flyhalf for the Sharks when they take on the Leopards in the ABSA Currie Cup on Friday night.

The side shows five changes to the unit that downed Free State last weekend, with injuries forcing the hand of the coaching to a certain extent. Match-winning goal-kicker Rory Kockott will not make the trip, due to a shoulder injury picked up last week, necessitating the Argentinian’s selection as a starting goal-kicking option. Charl McLeod replaces Kockott in the number 9 jersey.

Prop Deon Carstens has a rib injury, so Pat Cilliers will be at loosehead this week, leaving the number 3 jersey to young Wiehahn Herbst, who did well coming on against the Cheetahs. Keegan Daniel starts in the number 6 shirt, while Skipper Badenhorst will be at hooker. Jacques Botes and Craig Burden will be on the bench this week, along with another youngster, Dale Chadwick, who takes Carstens’ place in the 22. Mike Rhodes, who had to cry off at the last minute last week, will be back in the number 18 jersey.

Outside of the halfbacks, the only other change to the backline is at right wing, where Chris Jordaan comes in for the injured Odwa Ndungane. Monty Dumond is the unfortunate player to miss out, as the Cronj&eacute twins are named on the bench together with Waylon Murray.

Sharks 22:
15 Stefan Terblanche (capt), 14 Chris Jordaan, 13 Andries Strauss, 12 Riaan Swanepoel, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Juan Martin Hernández(*) 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Albert van den Berg, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Skipper Badenhorst, 1 Pat Cilliers
16 Craig Burden, 17 Dale Chadwick(*), 18 Michael Rhodes, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Ross Cronjé, 21 Guy Cronjé, 22 Waylon Murray

  • @JJR (Comment 14) : I wonder how Absa Feel about this? Last week as well, just one match televised by Super Sport.

Vodacom are smiling because every game in the S14 and TRi nations (and even some vodacom cup) is shown.

Maybe Absa should sell the naming rights to Vodacom, then we might get to see more Currie Cup rugby.

Imagine the Vodacom Cheetahs playing Vodacom Western Province and Vodacom Blue Bulls at Vodacom Park in the Vodacom Super 14 AND the Vodacom Currie Cup.

  • @war1 (Comment 20) :

Delayed Live is when Supersport allows them to start showing the game before the other one is finished.

It’s like the players are still playing on the field…just not doing what you’re watching.

But I know for a fact that a lot of people appreciate that “delayed live” thing. It doesn’t help much though cos they only do it for BOK games – would be cool if they showed a rugby game on SABC 2 every weekend (during rugby season)…

    05 August 2009 (10:49)

due to unprecedented demand, SuperSport will broadcast Friday’s Absa Currie Cup match between table-topping Griquas and Western Province”

he seems to have bmt too

last week when our under 21′s were busy getting a klap it was his kicking that changed the game around
even though like jordaan he is a full back he will not find wing a problem and prolly slightly faster then jordaan

  • @try time (superrugby’s kryptonite is SANZAR) (Comment 108) : it should be easy all you have to do is replace the sharks score every 5 minutes. sharks 7-0 leopards.
    sharks 14-0 leopards.
    sharks 21-0 leopards.
    sharks 28-0 leopards.

    see it will be easy.
