Gerhard Mostert to join Sharks?

My take on rumours is that I’ll always wait until I have them confirmed by two independent sources before writing about them here. A recent article on suparugby.com has corroborated what I’d heard from a reliable source and it appears as if Lions lock Gerhard Mostert will join the Sharks in time for the 2010 Super 14.

Mostert is a pretty big guy, at 1.99m and somewhere in the region of 120kg. He started his career with the Leopards, playing under 20 rugby for them in 2003. He made his senior Lions debut in 2006, but had been hampered by injuries throughout his career. When fit and on song, he’s a ferocious player, but one wonders exactly how good a buy this is, given how fragile he seems to be. He is currently injured and won’t play at all in the Currie Cup.

According to the Super Rugby article, Mostert will join the Sharks at the beginning of November. I’ve heard that Albert van den Berg won’t be carrying on next year, meaning that the Sharks lock department could do with some strengthening. If Mostert is indeed coming to Durban and can stay fit, he should be a good addition to the squad.

Maybe we can find a way to combine this oke with Mike Rhodes… so we get rid of Rhodes’ knee and Mostert’s shoulder and end up with one reliable player :)

Good to hear some rumours so early.
Albert has done well for us – but he won’t be able to keep up with the Super 14 pace next year.

  • If Albert is going to stop playing, then this certainly is a neccesary purchase.

    Where is Hargreaves nowadays?

  • So next year we have Sykes, Muller, Hargreaves and Mostert, with Rhodes and Blignaut with possibly Jeandre Marais from the Under 21s?

Should be well covered in that dept.

At flyhalf, Ruan, Hernandez, Monty, Guy and Len.

Scrumhalf, Rory, Charl, Ross and Ruan if necessary.

Fullback, Odwa, Stef, Hernandez, Lambie, Luddick?????

I think we aren’t going to be that bad.

And all the talk of tough draws whould be forgotten. Sharks had the “easy draw” this year and we failed to make the playoffs. Bulls had the rough, 5 week tour and won the comp.

  • Damn, but the Tjarks must be desparate to buy the sick note that is Mostert.
I can’t understand why the Sharks are going to change a winning formula, when you need a player go to BLOEM…………………Dawid De Villiers is all that they need to buy.
