How’s this for a bizarre turn of events? It turns out that Jaque Fourie doesn’t really have a contract with the Lions after all – or at least, that’s what his lawyer, Frikkie Erasmus, believes.
Now, hold your horses just a second. Isn’t this the same Frikkie Erasmus who just happens to be the Stormers and WP Media Manager? Is he not the same guy who is Rassie Erasmus’s trusted advisor and some may say, chief henchman? Isn’t there something of a conflict of interests here if a player is represented by a lawyer who is so clearly working for “the other side”? The plot thickens again.
That aside, though, Erasmus apparently told Jacques van der Westhuzen of the Star that “”The document the Lions are relying on to keep Jaque on board is not a contract.” This, of course, being in the context of WP seeking a virtually immediate release for Fourie, which would presumably allow him to join up with them straight after the Tri-Nations. It would appear that the “world’s best number 13″ has made up his mind about where his immediate future lies, anyway.
There is a wider implication here, though. How much of a mess must the Lions’ back office be if they can’t even manage to tie their top players into binding contracts? Could this be the secret behind the rumoured Sharks signings of Louis Ludick and Gerhard Mostert, which we are still hoping to confirm with the Union? There is increasing speculation in the media about Willem Alberts as well and although he is apparently contracted to stay with the Lions until the end of next year, if all the Lions’ contracts are as poor as the one Fourie holds, perhaps the big number 8 might also be moving to Durban sometime soon.
Nothing but pure speculation on my part, of course.Tweet
