Promising Cheetahs number 8 Francois Uys will play no further part in their 2009 campaign, having ruptured a knee ligament in a freak training ground accident earlier this week. Kabamba Floors will take over from Uys for this weekend’s game against Boland.

In other changes to the team, Philip Snyman comes in at centre for JW Jonker, with a fit-again David de Villiers back at lock in the place of Izak van der Westhuizen. Promising hooker Ashley Johnson and under 21 loose forward Chris Dry come onto the bench this week.

Centre Rob Ebersohn and prop Coenie Oosthuizen, both the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, have both committed their immediate futures to the Cheetahs by signing extent ions to their existing contract.

15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Danwel Demas, 13 Philip Snyman, 12 Robert Ebersohn, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 JP Joubert, 8 Kabamba Floors, 7 Frans Viljoen, 6 Johan Wessels, 5 David de Villiers, 4 Nico Breedt, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss (capt), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen.
Replacements: 16 Ashley Johnson, 17 Jean Botha, 18 Izak van der Westhuizen, 19 Chris Dry, 20 Tertuis Carse, 21 Louis Strydom, 22 Corné Uys.

  • Hey Rob,
I must just share this story I saw on the BBC website about Harlequins faking a blood injury with movie blood capsules. The director got banned for 3 years for this crazy stunt. Is this stuff really going on in international rugby, or is it limited to the sneaky poms?

  • They should just get rid of the rule that you cannot come back on once you’re replaced and there will be no need for this.

Rugby has already eveolved into a 22 man game… why not just make it official and use rolling subs.

Lol. Yeah did you see the pic? there was an enormous amount of blood squirting out of his mouth!

I’m glad Deans got banned – he really hung Williams out to dry and had him shoulder all the blame for essentially only following coach’s orders.
I dont see many players refusing in the heat of the moment.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 11) : I did feel sorry for Williams, he probably had the least say in the matter and initially got the worst punishment.

I actually saw the game live on tv and remember noticing the doctor/physio fiddling with Williams’ mouth. Seemed a bit dodgy from the word go.

Also Richards appears to be a serial offender.

I just think it’s poor that a coach mandates his players to cheat.

And if Williams didnt do it and they lost, which happened anyway, then he’d never get selected again.

    Poor guy.

I just have to ask what sort of doctor/physio/coach thinks it’s acceptable to carry around capsules of fake blood.

The 18-year-old timed 1minute 55.45seconds – the best time in the world this year – to beat defending champion Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya (1:57.90) while Jennifer Meadows of Great Britain took the bronze (1:57.93).

  • A few things I wanted to say earlier.

Cape Town – In an attempt to simplify the laws surrounding the rolling maul, IRB Referee Manager, Paddy O’Brien, has issued a list of instructions to be coached, played and refereed with immediate effect.

The changes will be implemented in all South African competitions from the weekend of August 28/29.

    The changes are as follows:

    1. When a maul is formed originally, the ball carrier must be in contact with the ball and in front of the maul formation. In other words, at this time the opposition must be able to contest the possession at the formation.

    2. The player at the back of the maul, must be bound – AS PER LAW, FROM HAND TO SHOULDER – at all times. Should he detach or not be bound as per above, then the players in front of the ball carrier is obstructing the opponents

    3. When the maul stops GOING FORWARD in the first instance, the referee is to call “restart or use it”. When it stops going forward in the second instance, the referee is to call “use it or loose it”. The maul may not move backwards or side ways!

  • And…..

An alteration to Law 3 governing the number of replacements permitted in a match came into effect on July 28, 2009 and applies to the Game globally. The alteration allows National Unions with jurisdiction over matches in their territory the option of allowing up to eight named replacements in a match day squad. This will also operate for cross-border club or provincial competitions with the agreement of the respective Unions involved.

If a Union allows the naming of 23 players in a match day squad for any domestic competition, there must be a minimum of three specialist front row players within the named eight replacements comprising two props and a hooker.

Once all front row replacements have been utilised, and there is a further front row injury, and no fit front row player is available from the original starting team or replacement bench, the injured player will leave the field but may not be replaced. This is a change to the existing Laws and ensures, in playing with 14 men, that a team going to uncontested scrums does not gain an advantage.

At this stage the amendments to Law 3 are for domestic implementation only by respective Unions, but the IRB will monitor the implementation of the amended Law within competitions. The implementation will not apply to international matches.

Uys is from EG Jansen in Boksburg, I first saw him play a few years back for the Valke in the Craven Week, and knew then that he would get higher honours..he went on to join the Lions and made the SA junior sides (under 19 and under 21). Captained the Lions under 21 side.

Last year under Loffie he got his first senior cap against Boland..but then never used again and he moved to the Cheetahs where he’s been a regular starter for the senior side.
