Pienaar IS at fullback!

Ruan Pienaar will start at fullback against the Wallabies in Perth on Saturday, swapping places with Frans Steyn, who will be on the bench.

Pienaar last wore the number 15 shirt in November 2007, against Wales. It will be his third test start in that position and only his 12th start overall, in a career now spanning 33 tests. Pienaar has also started tests for the Boks at scrumhalf and flyhalf, while he has also played inside centre and wing when coming on as a replacement.

Steyn, who has signed a three-year deal with French club Racing Metro 92, will clearly not be a part of the Boks’ long-term plans unless he decides to return to South Africa. Pienaar now looks like the man being groomed to make the fullback spot his own.

Schalk Burger has been named on the replacements bench, leaving the number 6 jersey to the form man, Hein Brüssow.

15 Ruan Pienaar, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 John Smit (captain), 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 Jannie du Plessis, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Schalk Burger, 20 Ricky Januarie, 21 Adi Jacobs, 22 Frans Steyn.

  • i certainly can’t see how this could backfire. Ruan is 10 times the player frans steyn is in any department, well except maybe kicking from halfway…but in terms of reading the game, passing, joining the backline & putting other players into space ruan is king…

Unless ruan personally fcuks up & shows a remarkable lack of bmt…

If you have a programmed flyhalf and a talented player – and you need someone to play fullback – who do you pick?

Let’s just roll these Aussies over – get the 3n – and come back home!

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : yes but he used to be a defensive nightmare at 10 as well and in the last year he has come on leaps and bounds. primarily because juan smith and spies weren’t making theirs. his defence has been good all season so i don’t know why you bring back a game he played 2 years ago as the proof of how dire he is. if we do that then we would question half the teams ability.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : yes but flyhalf is a lot more demanding on defence than fullback. i would rather look at what he will offer jp and habana. remember o connor isn’t the best defender in the world at full back, yet he has added a lot to the game. i say judge the guy on his current abilities and defence isn’t a concern. his short fall has been his place kicking, which will not be needed on saturday. i haven’t heard anyone question his defensive skills this year, in fact we all wanted morne dropped cos of his, and ruan replace him. so its odd now that he is fullback his defence is going to go back two years.

Fact is F Steyn atlast is showing us he is a brilliant player and that he is a full back

But because SA rugby still think like amatures we dont pick over seas based players

Ruan is not a full back and he is not great under the high ball, he is a flyhalf/ scrummy

SA rugby continue to stuff Sharks players around like they did Frans and guys like you blammed Frans etc , what if it all goes pear shaped for Ruan ?? he doesnt cut it at fullback ?? he then wants to leave

Will we now also say good riddence to bad rubbish ??

ruan has played full back, and scrumhalves regularly move back to cover the back if the fullback is up front.

It’s nothing new, if the player is good enough he should be ok. And we all know Ruan is good enough. Besides we also know he’ll be swapping with Steyn plenty on attack.

  • I used to think that Ruan would be a great 15, but I’m not in favour of shifting him around so much – let him compete at 10!

And it makes perfect sense to not include foreign players – ensures that we have the country’s best talent attracting crowds and developing future stars here – not in Europe.

    Great call PDV!
