Not So Super Draw

After the Sharks blew a Home Semi and then a play-off spot with a favourable draw in the 2009 Super 14 season, the rugby gods have offered them a testing fixture list next year to see if maybe they are better under pressure.

The Sharks couldn’t have asked for a worse draw than the one they have received for the final Super 14 tournament. Not only do they have to play the tougher teams away, they have to cross the Tasman four times during their five match away leg. And it doesn’t get any easier when the first two games away are against the Crusaders and then the Waratahs.

It is time for the Sharks backup players to raise their hands before the Boks get back from Tri-Nations duty. John Plumtree is going to need all his depth if he is going to finally end the Sharks reign as Super 14 chokers.

The full Sharks fixture list is as follows:

13th Feb Chiefs (H)
19th Feb Cheetahs (H)
26th Feb Crusaders (A)
06th Mar Waratahs (A)
13th Mar Brumbies (A)
20th Mar Highlanders (A)
27th Mar Hurricanes (A)
03rd Apr Reds (H)
Bye
17th Apr Lions (A)
24th Apr Blues (H)
01st May Bulls (A)
08th May Stormers (H)
14th May Force (H)

  • They are going to need a good captain to get the team through this schedule.

  • the only way they will do well is to keep the bench boys game fit. plum is going to have to go against his principles and make sure the backup players are getting enough run on experience. you cannot afford to have guys take two games to get ready.

I am with you sista!! Seems everytime we get a favourable draw we dont pull finger…we need to be kept on our toes …making life very difficult for ourselves, but that’s how the Sharks are..

  • @blackshark (Comment 8) : part of crossing that bridge is making sure you have the players. although the super 14 isn’t the priority at the moment, having the players ready for it should be. plum must make sure the foundation is in place now. he has won a cc, so he must use the remainder of this comp to make sure he has the depth and combos required to contest in the s14. juan and rory aren’t connecting, so that needs sorting out. centre pairings are an issue. stephan and albert are good but can they handle 13 gruelling games at their age. we need to know that if a player goes down with an injury the next in line is ready and firing. not like this year where frans is handed the flyhalf position and it takes him two games to play anything decent.

  • Yeah, I think ‘underdogs’ is the only way the Sharks know how to motivate themselves. Don’t be surprised to see them play better.

  • the good thing for next year is that there will be competition for places. keegan will light a fire under ryan’s butt. charl has fired some warning shots at rory. mvovo has let odwa know his time is limited. and monty has surprised everyone and shown he has something to offer the team. a few more match ups like this can only benefit the sharks.

  • Stormers’ draw on the udder hand not too bad I suppose.

First up is the Winning Way Lions away followed by 5 home games & a bye.

  • i don’t understand though the mentality of sanzar, the costs involved in flying the players everywhere is steep. but they are happy to double the sa teams trips over the tasman. they should be look at more cost effective ways of transporting players. like starting at one end of the trip and then go to the next closest opposition on the tour. ie. start on the south island and move your way to perth, or vice versa. but flying the players over the tasman four times is wasteful.

  • @blackshark (Comment 24) : yeah i wouldn’t mind stef being used when the sharks need to protect the rear, but rested when we are after bp. stef is a great guy to bring on at the end of a game when you need a cool head. but i cannot see the guy handling 13×80 minutes of high impact rugby.

  • a guy like ludik is a good player to compliment stefan. ludik will be great to start the game with. he sets up a lot of try opportunities, but can be a little shoddy under pressure. you then bring on stef to just consolidate the lead and make sure when it is panic stages he will be there to keep a cool head. far too often you see coaches take the older players off at the end of the game and cracks start showing.

how many times have we seen john smit taken off and the team implode.

  • also instead of chasing the bp in the last ten, go for it in the first half. if the oppositions defence is too good come out second half with the cool hand lukes to shut out the game the boring way. i hate watching the sharks trying to score two tries for a bp in the last 10 minutes, while they had been cruising in the first 70.

  • @McLovin (Comment 35) : it makes sense, because there was a big issue over the way rugby ruined the ellis park pitch before the confed cup. so loftus, ellis and bloem stadiums are probably going to have to stop all rugby a month before the world cup to allow them time to create pitches for poefters.
