The son of former Springbok great Danie Gerber, Dandré Gerber, is to make his debut for the Boland Cavaliers in a Currie Cup rugby match against Griquas at Wellington on Friday.
He is one of two players the new Director of Coaching, Chester Williams, brought with him to Wellington from Western Province.
The other one is fullback Hayden Groepes, who will also make his debut.
Gerber was a member of WP’s Under-21 squad.
Williams said he would not have brought Gerber to Boland if he was not convinced about his ability and talent.
“Danré looks likes his father, is a bit taller and has exactly the same brilliant footwork as his dad,” Williams said.
Gerber will partner PJ Vermeulen, who also hails from Province, in midfield. Vermeulen made his debut last weekend against the Sharks.
Williams has also dropped captain Clemen Lewis and brought former Blue Bull Harry Vermaas in at hooker.
Lock forward Rito Hlungwane takes over the captaincy and moves to the flank.
William’s big surprise is the selection of experienced fullback Justin Peach on the left wing.
