While the Blue Bulls will be welcoming back their Springboks and may use as many as four of the returning ten heroes this weekend against the Boland Cavaliers, they are also holding thumbs on three of the side who were injured in the loss to the Sharks at Loftus on Saturday.
Lock Flip van der Merwe injured his hand and although it is not fractured as feared on Saturday night, he might miss this weekend’s match against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington.
Jaco Pretorius has injured his knee and captain Derick Kuun is recovering from a blow to the head. A decision on their availability will also be taken later in the week.
Meanwhile Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke, while aware of the amount of rugby played by Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Pierre Spies, Fourie du Preez, Morne Steyn and Bryan Habana, has made it clear that he would love to give the other returning Boks a run as early as this weekend.
Danie Rossouw didn’t see much action on the recent tour of Australasia as he was carrying a light injury, while Wynand Olivier, Chiliboy Ralepelle and Gurthr Steenkamp will be raring to get some decent match time.
They are bound to be included for Saturday, pending fitness.
Ludeke will undoubtedly use as many of the ten returnees as possible for the following weekend’s crucial match against the Free State Cheetahs at Loftus. The Blue Bulls, currently fifth on the log and one point and one place behind the Free State side need to win that match to enhance their chances of making the Currie Cup semi-finals.
