Jacobs, Smit start in Kimberley

In a somewhat unexpected move, Adrian Jacobs has been named to start at outside centre when the Sharks take on Griquas. John Smit will start at tighthead prop.

It’s a pretty strong-looking team, with Riaan Swanepoel back at inside centre to partner Jacobs, while the rest of the backline is unchanged from last week. Waylon Murray and Andries Strauss, last week’s starting centre pair, will be on the bench, while Rory Kockott comes back into the squad in the place of Charl McLeod.

There’s an interesting change in the second row as well, with Alistair Hargreaves preferred to veteran Albert van den Berg in the number 5 jersey. An injury to Jacques Botes means a move into the number 6 jersey for Keegan Daniel, while big Mike Rhodes gets a rare start on the other side of the scrum.  Jean Deysel has recovered sufficiently to be included on the bench this week, where he and a fit-again Craig Burden will provide some impetus coming on later in the game.

  • Prima Facie this doesn`t look bad at all.
Great to see Strauss out of the starting line up. Just a shame he`s still on the bench . . . .

Of course I would`ve preferred starting Deysel. Unless he`s not 100% ready and Plum`s hoping we don`t need him?

Rory back on the bench . .. . I`m not comfortable with this either.
Would`ve preferred Charl to start with Pienaar on the bench, but lets see what happens!

Our centre pairing looks exciting, with JUAN HERNANDEZ, ( the best flyhalve in SA today? ) inside them we could see some fireworks . . .
Lots of pressure on Hargreaves and Rhodes to perform. If they`re up for it who knows . . . that elusive bonus point might be within our grasp.

  • Ah well…I’m tired of analysing the boys now.

Truth is this is a good team…Springboks all over…and we should be capable of beating the Griquas…or any other CC squad with this 22.

    Sharks forever!

  • Eish, I hope this centre pairing gels quickly and we can have a more settled team going into the semi’s.

Maybe Adi at 12 next to Hernandez would have been a more exciting prospect

But these guys play for the same team – how much time do they need to gel?

All they need to do is pass to each other…and we’ll score 4 tries in the first half…

  • @blackshark (Comment 14) : I think for a centre combo to be successfull together they need to gel. I think it’s all about timing and that comes with gametime together. If the 2 don’t understand what the other is going to do they become ineffective.

  • @blackshark (Comment 14) : You underestimate the `Kwasse at your peril . . .
Good news is I see they have an inexperienced flanker this weekend.

But I also feel if the sharks can retain ball ( at least 100 % better than last weekend ) and if the forwards remember their job, that is not lurking in the backline, the bonus point is not impossible here.

The boys just have to play ” thinking ” rugby. Don`t run everything from anywhere. That`s suicide. Get into their half with some clever kicking, pile on the pressure, force the mistake and pounce. Simple springbok rugby. We have enough bokke in this team to do it.

  • In my mind the sharks are either going to whip the griquas or lose, there is no middle ground here, we click or we do not, if we do lose im not positive about our chances in the semi, but i like the look of this team and im very happy with hargreaves starting, i never thought i would say it but he offers more ‘beef’ in the second row, go sharks!

  • the sharks are going to win this game. the only game that worries me is the lions wp game. i know the lions have the fire power to hold wp, the question is do they have the fire. the game will be close the first 60, but my fear is the wp’s hunger over the last 20 will seal the deal. if the lions can just stop the 4th try.

  • no, i am just not going to get conned by little problems in the sharks. i am just looking at the facts. i have watched griquas and they are a team under pressure. they are a good team, but they lack the experience to handle a big game like this. you can see it by the stupid yellow cards they have received in the last two games. john smit is back and he’ll add the much needed grunt at the breakdown. add to that the bollocking the players have received the last few weeks for lacksidaisical play. this team will be fired up. simply the sharks will have two good leaders on the park. smit will lead the forwards and stefan the backs. adi will need to pull his socks up and ruan mix it up a little. passing everything to juan is predictable and easy to defend against. he needs to be a little rory as well (rory = selfish). but these are little issues in a great team.

  • @try time (Comment 35) : On paper I agree, but the Kwasse has a lot to play for and might be more hungry than the Sharks….and the game is in Kimberly which is a huge factor. The Sharks SHOULD take it but they can definately not just rock up and expect 5 points.

Do you think they’ll get the 4 tries?

  • @Pokkel (Comment 36) : yes they will. and i think they may give away four. with adi on the park i see a hole in the defence. but our forwards are going to walk over theirs. i don’t think the sharks are going to just rock up. they’ll probably fly to kimberley today and relax a little, so when the game is on they can focus their energy on the game. the griquas are in a play off against a world class outfit. sorry to say the sharks have been here done this before. i want a 45 37 win by the sharks. i don’t care if griquas score, the sharks must just score more.

  • @robdylan (Comment 46) : to be honest i am less concerned about adi’s defence than his lack of vision at times. he is either brilliant with ball in hand or he is a disaster. his defence in general is good. i don’t care if he misses 3 tackles this weekend as long as he creates three tries. earlier this week i said the sharks need to risk more when going for a bonus point. i see adi as that risk. you can always sub him with waylon if he isn’t firing in the first 30. better than bringing him off the bench and then you are stuck with him for the rest of the game.
