What of Alberts and Ludik?

Written by Warren Smith (war1)

Posted in :In the news, Lions, Original Content, Sharks on 21 Oct 2009 at 13:31

The outcome of Jaque Fourie’s arbitration case is now known, with the Bok midfielder being allowed to be released from his contract. Technically, Fourie could still re-sign with the Lions although that seems like an unlikely scenario because the player seems quite determined to go to Cape Town. If Dick Muir’s appointment is enough to keep Fourie reconsider, he has already done incredibly well.

Sharks fans watched this case quite  closely, as it was expected if the ruling went in favour of Fourie, then Willem Alberts and Louis Ludik would make their way down to Durban. But the appointment of Muir has thrown a possible curve ball into the equation. It seems that both players had already asked to leave even before Jaque Fourie’s arbitration case was heard, yet the influential Muir may have enough to keep both players in the Lion’s den.

The pessimistic among us may believe that the capitulation of the Sharks in the semifinal will be enough to convince the duo to stay in Joburg but I don’t believe the matter is as simple as that.

I don’t have any “inside info” so we will have to see how this matter develops and hopefully we can expect news soon.

More on this as it develops . . .

  • If they do end up in Durbs the Sharks will be much stronger especially with Alberts adding such much needed bulk to their loose trio (as well as good ‘go forward’ ball)

  • War a friend told me that there is an article in the Star that links both Alberts and Ludick to a move to Durban. A blogger on Keo has also mentioned the same article, you live in JHB if I remember correctly, have you seen that article. Apparently they have the same contract as Jacques and are still keen to move. Tried to get onto the Star site but you need a membership number so couldn’t find anything.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 3) : but there contract specifies player as opposed to Fourie’s which had him down as an annalist, so its not as clear cut, can you believe an organisation like the lions would employ Lawyers as incompetent as that!!

  • Hi everyone, on the 17th November, the Boks are taking on Saracens. Now what I am trying to do (In a perfect world) is to try and fill Wembley with as many Saffas as possible, and show the po.ms how it’s done. The tickets are only £10, so there’s no excuse about it being too expensive, and it should be an awesome atmosphere.
    What do you guys think?

  • “…Asked if Alberts and Ludik would contest their contracts following the completion of Fourie’s arbitration case, their agent, Peet van Zyl, said: “At this stage the matter is extremely sensitive. But both players have requested to be released. This happened before the outcome of Jaque’s arbitration case was made public.” This is part of the abovementioned article. Thank you WPW, it seems to me that the agent is subtly saying that they will be going that route. Well at least that is what I am reading. Further in the article It also seems to me that the Lions management have admited that this could be the case.

While former Griquas captain Jonathan Mokuena will provide cover should Alberts be released from his contract, the Lions could have a dilemma at fullback as Earl Rose blows hot and cold, while his understudy, Earl Lewis, lacks experience at Super 14 level.

(Comment 74) : I agree about Ludwig I always pictured him as your typical Bulls supporter  Liked it when the presenter asked him if he thought Francois would be happy No he answere, would Johan be happy, No was his answer, Basically he believed he was the only one that had made the correct choice in sending both girls away and going it alone. Francois looked really great and I also liked Johan. Piet was a bit wishy washy, and I couldn’t believe he chose the English girl Ashley/Linda instead of the Afrikaans girl and then got uptight in the second to last episode when she couldn’t answer in Afrikaans, surely he would have realised that she couldn’t speak Afrikaans by then? Can’t wait for the next series though.

  • All Seniors Aren’t Senile!

An older, white-haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young girl at his side.

He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his new girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The old man said, ‘No, I’d like to see something more special.’

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over.. ‘Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000′ the jeweler said.

The young lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, ‘We’ll take it.’

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, ‘by check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon,’ he said.

Monday morning, the jeweler phoned the old man.

‘There’s no money in that account.’

‘I know,’ said the old man, ‘But let me tell you about my weekend!’

Previously Huisgenoot carried an article rubbishing the farmer by his 2 choices who apparently fled within a few hours of arriving at his spot.

I see it sometimes pays to listen to the ladies nattering away.

Is it wrong to hope John Mitchell falls out with the Force and comes over to help his pal Plum? Plum isn’t out of his depth, he just needs some fresh ideas and maybe a better sounding board than Bashford. Who else would be up for it?

  • @rekinek (retreat -ing) (Comment 144) : it is almost about how to loose whn it does not matter and win when it does is a problem.

  • @mbayshark (Comment 141) : @mbayshark (Comment 143) : Story doing the rounds is that Jake is in line for the Argentinian Coach and that in order to afford Dick the Lions had to let the contract with winning ways lapse
I done think the Sharks win ration is the problem but rather the squad system that they are using I thought Beast John and Biz were stuffed and that Wolla was not his normal self-maybe not fully over the injury I thin the squad needs to be strengthened with 2 good players for every position plus 1 extra for the boks so in the case of Biz it would be him and 2 good hookers as back up
I also feel that the returning boks couldnt get their game up and maybe they need a break and the First team should have had the last few weeks of the currie cup off and the bench warmers worked back into the squad
I understand why john and beast were brought back cos we had a prop problem but if there was depth in the position and rotated regularly there wouldnt have neen a problem

  • @Fattmann (Comment 147) : Agree with yiou that our squad needs to be strenthened. Yes we won most of our games, but the problem is not the winning, its how we win. We need to score the bonus points, that’s what the modern points system is all about. If you don’t score your 4 tries when it matters, you struggle to keep up most of the season. That’s why we had to play our first team up to the end to try and secure a home final, not that it mattered in the end. But more bonus points and it would not have happened.

  • @Fattmann (Comment 147) : this overplaying certain players killed sharks in S14. now I think Plum brought boks in beause he wanted them to gel and time was limited and theyt just weren’t fitting in.

    @mbayshark (Comment 148) : killer instinct !
that’s why once you are up you want your reserves on because these guys still want to show off.

i’m outta here for now, chatta tomorrow

  • Jake’s contract with the Lions was just until the end of October, and I don’t think the plan ever was to extend it further.

I think Ludik and Alberts will end up in Durbs..Alberts is getting married in January and word is that his future wife wants to be closer to the sea…LOL!

Dick Muir is Director of rugby at the Lions but will also coach the Super 14 side, that leaves the Currie Cup coaching position open for Hans Coetzee.

Hope that has cleared a few things up!
