Alberts, Ludik WILL be Sharks

A source close to the Sharks team has confirmed that both Louis Ludik and Willem Alberts very much intend to join the Sharks ahead of the 2010 season.

Despite the favourable conclusion of Jaque Fourie’s arbitration hearing with the Lions union, there were suggestions that the appointment of Dick Muir to the Director of Rugby position in Johannesburg may have convinced Alberts and Ludik to change their plans.

We can confirm that both players are very much committed to moving to Durban and we expect an official announcement to follow in due course.

  • Good to hear, some much needed power and better depth at the back. we have too may all rounders that can play 10, 12 and 13 but are not quick enough for the back three.
now we just need another good strong lock ahla Mark Andrews

  • Great opportunity for the Sharks and the two players, consider the prospects of a back three with Jean, Kanko and Alberts…bring on Brussow, sadly for a while now all botes does is make up the numbers.. probably the least influential number 6 in the currie cup(apart from the leopards and boland).. Kitshoff from griquas was better!! As for Ludik, he will get a chance to establish himself as the next Sharks fullback, i dont think this spells bad news for Pat Lambie either as he i do believe could be a promising flyhalf…thats just a personal belief.. man guys, Sharks have good prospects coming through the ranks!!

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 38) : Yep but advantage should be to the Sharks. Although I have never been to NZ I think they may battle more than us in Durbs in Feb.

War, I am more into the Sharks than SB, I know very un patriotic, but if I had to choose between watching a Sharks match and a SB match 9 out of 10 times I would choose Sharks. Although if PDV does stick to taking a second side it may be interesting although I would rather we beat Ireland with a thrashing after the Houniss debacle, and are we playing the cockerels? Italy I am sure we can field our Emerging bok C-side.

  • @Whindy (Comment 102) : Whindy take heart, Dick Muir is now your head coach, remember what he did with the Sharks, after Putt, still have nightmares about that time. My mother always used to say every union like empires peaks and then the natural way of things is for it to hit low, (although a scientist my mother was a keen historian) and then it will pick up again. The Lions cannot go any lower than they have already hit, so your pick up is surely starting.

As to Alberts and Ludik I believe its actually better for the Lions to start rebuilding with players that whant to play with the Lions and are therefore committed to the union and whanting to make a name for themselves, rather than keeping guys who do not whant to stay and would rather be playing at another union.

@Whindy (Comment 102) : I was meant to add here, After the games I always wait to chat to the players and I often chatted to the Lions players especially my favorite Grobelar and Alberts, I always chatted to Loffie, and I can confirm that the Lions players had a good relationship with Loffie, you could see it in the way they always interacted with him. Also unlike other SA teams the Lions players and the Sharks players were always arranging to go out together after they were finished at the Stadium, so its really not surprising that Alberts and Ludik are keen to come to DBN they already have mates at the Sharks and the firing of Loffie just made their decision that much easier.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 113) : I have heard that Loffie did let certain things get out of hand especially fitness and Conditioning, but his team would die for him and leave because of him. Jake White treated him pretty shabbily IMO and he deserved better. I used to be a fan of white and still think he did brilliantly to win the world cup, but I think as a person he is not a very nice individual, just the way he treated his wife was not good!! But hey maybe you have to be like that to achieve results.

  • @Whindy (Comment 117) : I give Jake WHite the credit that he deserves he brought us the WC against all odds, but as a person he leaves much to be desired! He is a bit of a megalomaniac (sp?)! No professional person or Union would have treated Loffie the way he was treated. His contract was ending, don’t renew it, but do it in a professional manner! And to stab Loffie in the back while promising him to help him, is vulgar! However, when I read about the Loffie/White debacle I was not that surprised. I read “In black and White” Jake’s book and he tried a similar stunt when he came to the Sharks as assistant coach, only at the Sharks Jake came off second best. I was however very surprised at how he treated his wife, in the Book she is mentioned in just about every chapter, and he sings her praise, that he wouldn’t be where he was without her etc. Guilt maybe?
