Well guys, since the season is now over for the Sharks, let’s take some time to think up our own set of awards for the team. Hell, it’s not like we’re going to win anything else this year, is it?

This is how it’s going to work. I’ll list some categories and you reply in the comments with your nominations. After a week or so, I’ll collate all the replies and then tell you who I think should have won :)

The categories I can think of are as follows, but don’t hesitate to add your own if you think I’ve missed any!

Best match of the year
Worst match of the year
Super 14 player of the year
Currie Cup player of the year
Forward of the year
Back of the year
Young player of the year
Try of the year
Overall 2009 MVP
Most improved player of the year
Most exciting player of the year
Most disappointing player of the year
Best individual performance in a match
Worst individual performance in a match
Best attacking player of the year
Best defensive player of the year

That should be enough to carry on with. Have fun!

  • Worst match of the year… the temptation here is to go with the Currie Cup semi defeat, because the pain is still fresh. In the context of an overall performance, though, I feel that the Super 14 capitulation to the Cheetahs was far worse. The loss to the Reds at least had some mitigating circumstances, in that we’d beaten the Blues and Chiefs already and were probably tired. But that Cheetahs defeat was just plain inexcusable. We simply never pitched.

Losing to Province at ABSA Stadium in the Currie Cup was a close second.

  • let me think of some others…

best team performance of the year… I’m thinking the Blues game in the Super 14 and the away win at Loftus. Both were special. Loftus loses out, though, because we only played one half of rugby.

  • ok – so let’s qualify this a little.

I see “young player” as a guy of 23 or under who made his debut for the Sharks this year. Or maybe even a current under 21 player

  • @GI Ice (Bulletproof) (Comment 3) : I didn’t think Hernandez was that bad…he got backfoot ball most of the time and he defended very well for a small oke…also most of the ‘long distance’ tries that we scored was because of Hernandez’s vision. You could see him look up and sum up the situation very quickly and start the attacks from our own half.

I think we are too quick to make players into Springboks based on one decent Currie Cup season. A full season of Super 14 should be the minimum. I’m worried that guys like de Jongh, Ashley Johnson, Lionel Mapoe and co are going to be pushed in too soon.

Perhaps he’s a shoe-in for the best defensive player?

The game against the Bulls was won almost singlehandedly won by Hernandez except for 5 points which McLeod scored. Also, not only did he have to try and fit in in a new team, with new structures etc. he played almost every game with either a new scrummy or a new inside centre! Still he managed to creat great tries/opportunities which Adi just gave to the oposition

  • @Whindy (Comment 68) : I agree with you, in the Cheetahs match he was the spark behind both tries and then if Adi had only run the ball instead of trying a F@@ing drop goal could have had another try   Then that kick into touch was sublime. The one where he kicked low below the wind, and it landed infield before going out and we had a throw in back in Cheetahs territory! As to S14 he has signed for the S14, so he will be playing in it, and should be better as by then hopefully he would have already played and trained with the team.

  • A lot of support for McLeod… was he really THAT good? Or was it just that Rory and (to an extent) Ruan were so kak?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Charl McLeod a lot, but I just don’t see him as the Currie Cup player of the year. I’m leaning towards Craig Burden for that one.

  • @Whindy (Comment 93) : No please! Ruan is NOT a utility back, he is a confidence player therefore not good when moved about. He needs a chance to specialise in one position. the way he has been used by the SB (I say SB because it was them that stipulated to the Sharks to play him at 9 then they move him to 10 and then to 15!)has come really close to ruining him as a player, and I really think when left in his position of choice he has a lot to offer any team.

In the S14 final Ruan outshone FDP! And then he got into the SB and so his moving of positions started and his form started going south!

  • @Whindy (Comment 121) : I hope you are not right. But I think the Sharks have stated that they were building depth so I believe they will be used in a squad system, pretty much like what they did with the Front row, where every or so alternate game they get to come off the bench. Problem with Deysel at the moment is that he and Bismarck are the only physical loosies (I know Bissie isn’t a loosie but he plays like one) in our pack so Deysel cannot be left to rest.

Fransie had confidence to give away, his moving around the backline was not as detrimental to him as it is to Ruan who is a confidence player. You could see Ruans head going down when he missed his 1st kick then he missed his second kick and that was over kadovers for him! Fransie, would pick himself up dust himself off and do something magic, or sometimes not :| .

But his moving around must have been awful for him too, actually it was worse for him as he played every position except prop  His saving grace though was his confidence!
@war1 (Comment 149) : Me too! And yesterday, I was all uptight. They interviewed Kanko on ECR and he said he likes watching the final but would rather had been playing in it  I felt like phoning the Station to ask them to allow me to speak to him. And remind the ou that if he and quite a number of his mates had not gone walk about 2 Saturdays ago he would have been playing in the Final instead of Johnson

  • From News24:

Griquas flank Davon Raubenheimer could be one of the surprise inclusions in the Springbok squad for the end of year tour.

The enlarged 37-man Bok touring group will be announced by Springbok coach Peter de Villiers after the Currie Cup final between the Blue Bulls and Cheetahs on Saturday evening in Pretoria.

Raubenheimer was seen at the UK visa office in Cape Town on Monday with a SA rugby official who admitted that Raubenheimer will be one of the new faces when the squad is announced on Saturday.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 161) : yeah, I know the alternative is ghastly. Still, if the Cheetahs win, suddenly they;ll have an extra 5000 supporters next year (thus doubling the numbers) and we’ll never hear the end of it. Until they finish last in the Super 14 again.

At least the Bulls fans can’t realistically get all that much worse…

  • @McLovin (Comment 162) : when Tank Lanning broke this one on twitter, I couldn’t believe it at first. Then I thought about it and realised that Raubenheimer really has been on of the standout 6es in the Currie Cup.

Still, I don’t believe we should be picking anyone based on one good Currie Cup alone. I know that I’m farting against thunder here, because the likes of Juan de Jongh, Ashley Johnson and Lional Mapoe will all be there.

Stegmann, Daniel, Grobbelaar and Botes, even though outshone by Raubenhemier in this Currie Cup, have all showed their mettle in the Super 14 over a number of seasons.

@Whindy (Comment 199) : This Cheetahs team have the nerves, they have basically been playing in a final from the 5th week of Curry Cup! I honestly believe they can do it, and its not just me voting with my heart, my heart was already kicked out 2 weeks ago

Get penalty, kick over zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! I am afraid like the Australians I like being entertained. And then there is those Neanderthals that support the Bulls like this gem from a guy on Keo “14. I agree though. Bakkies must break Brussow in two. Put him in hospital early on. Even if it ends his career, its a small price to pay for the CC and justice.” I find it difficult enough to support the Bulls even against foreign oposition, against Domestic competition I don’t even make the effort

  • @Whindy (Comment 228) : the thing is bulls used to play ten man rugby. we play nine man because nothing left rory’s hands. ten man is better by far. and lets not even talk about the sharks up and under tactic this season. especially how we decide to bring it back in the semi final, after we proved throughout the cc that the team is better when stefan runs with the ball.

  • @try time (Comment 232) : try Time I totally agree. The sharks used to be one of the best attacking sides around, but the whole emphasis has shifted to defense and unfortunately it has spoilt the whole game as nobody is prepared to take a chance anymore for fear of conceding a try or penalty. So we have the terrible game which is so boring to watch. Stefan Kicked away so much Ball, and the other thing he has to look out for is running across the field I would hate to play wing in the Sharks side, you never get any room to move in!! If you are ever lucky enough to even get the ball!!

Rub it on your bald patch and hey presto. But didn’t catch on. Not only didn’t it work so you would still be bald but you would also then stink of old marmite.
