Jannie, Bis put pen to paper

Guys, you’ll remember that we reported, quite a while back, that the Du Plessis brothers had verbally agreed to renew their Sharks contracts. Well, it turns out that they have now finally signed said contracts and will definitely be staying with the Sharks for the next two years.

Coach John Plumtree, speaking to the Daily News’ Craig Lewis (also a Sharksworld contributor) was clearly quite pleased that the matter is now settled. “I knew they would sign. They are absolutely world-class players and I’m really keen on carrying on working with them and taking their games to an even higher level. I have a very good relationship with them so it’s absolutely fantastic news.”

Plumtree reckons that although both players are already world class, they still have a fair bit to learn. Jannie, in particular, looks set for an expanded role in the squad as he learns to cover loosehead prop in addition to his accustomed position on the other side of the scrum. Sharksworld has been lead to believe that one of Jannie’s major sticking points was having to compete with the Bok captain for gametime and should he be able to spend some time at loosehead, all of the Sharks’ front row resources could benefit from a reduced workload.

In other news, there is no further news regarding either Louis Ludik or Willem Alberts other than that negotiations are ongoing.

  • Wonder what the conditions are…?

We knew this would happen…they come as a pair – and who (besides us) will pay for both together, when they have good props already??

I really think if that “condition” is true – Jannie is holding Biz back from much bigger contracts…a bit selfish though, dont you think?

  • Jannie is a bright guy… I think he just needs to be motivated a bit more, in a different way. He seems to get a bit introverted and sulky and we need to find a way to overcome that.

One only needs to look at our player buying habits in the past few years, coupled with the fact that they had to seel assets to be profitable. Eish in SA administrators = idiots

  • @war1 (Comment 18) : I read on Walters site, that they have till the 1 of November to make up their minds/sign, therefore we should know something by the end of next week!

Well this news is THE best!!!!! Bissie still a SHark! And I like Jannie, I have met and chatted to both Dups and both are really good guys, Jannie is maybe not being managed as well he could be.

How can one blame two brothers for being close, I really hope my boys grow to be that close. Remember once the parents go, siblings are all one has to support and love one unconditionally! I am there both my sister and I were very close to our parents but not that close to each other and now both our parents have passed on, and we both experience times of loneliness, despite both being married with children. This imo would have been lot less severe if we had been close like my friend and her brother, who fill each others gap left by the missing parent/s

And then when the franchise has anything from a fairly successful season all and sundry tend to forget what plonkers they are and they can continue on their merry way.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 20) : To true, a winning side can make a big difference, think of how unhappy the Sharks fans were a couple of years ago, Tony Watson and the bots got vey vocal then dick did well and all was forgiven. Storm clouds may be gathering again the S14 will be big for them next year!!

And by the way guys, just for the record, they were being hunted by the Bulls not WP, see Bissie’s interview on SA Rugby, and Rassie categorically denied having approached the Dup Brothers. It was no coincidence that on the same week that the Witness broke the news that Bissie was signing with the Sharks again, the following week the Bulls announced the signing of Gary Botha…

  • @Whindy (Comment 21) :
They had good reason to get vocal and the results were there for all to see.
As to the Super14, I know the draw is not great but I feel that the Sharks will have a good chance of ndoing very well with guys having had game time in important positions, Its as if our depth is greater than at this time last year and that is mainly due to game time that the marginal players have had. Add 1 or 2 acquisitions and I think the Sharks could be looking very good.
But what they need now is some serious rest and this could be the most important ingredient to a good Super 14.

Raubenheimer looks set to get Deysel’s spot, doesn’t he?

I will gladly see the whole WP / Stormers team, plus Raubenheimer in the EOYT squad. I think Deysel will still have a good shot at becoming a Bok, with areal blazer.

I think we have ceossed wires here. It was Raubenheimer that is apparently going on tour, no talk of Deysel, which is fine by me. Full recovery and rest needed.

  • I would prefer he does not go on this trip, I reckon he will be coming into his own by 2011 when we need him and Smiths body has finally packed up with workload it gets year in and year out. S14 he will carry the Cheetahs again next year then the Boks!!
