Deysel gets the call

Pierre Spies apparently injured his finger at Bok practice on Monday and needed to have an immediate operation to put it right. As a result, he’ll be withdrawn from the Bok end-of-year tour, paving the way for Jean Deysel to take his place.

There have been all sorts of shenanigans going on with the loose forward combinations, starting with Heinrich Brussow’s naming as a member of the midweek team. Speculation was rife that the pint-sized fetcher would miss out on the French test as a result, but Bok forwards coach Gary Gold has since confirmed, via Twitter, that Brussow, Schalk Burger and Sharks number 8 Ryan Kankowski will form the starting loose trio.

It’s not yet clear what sort of role Deysel will play, but the optimist in me hopes that he’ll make the bench for the test against France. Well done, Wolla. You should have been there right from the start!

  • Personal opinion I guess, but I think Deysel offers more than Vermeulen. He’s Juan Smith Mk II, with new and improved breakdown skills and a more powerful engine.

Alberts would not have been a bad choice either but I’m not saying Deysel won’t get the job done.

  • Sorry but this is a kak call, Deysel hasn’t had the impact he had when he first became Robs new love child – in fact i recall looooook making him his bitch at Newlands.

I think Vermulen and alberts desrve it more. Personally i would roll with Kanko or Pottie from the bulls.

  • Wolla’s selection is the correct one because he’s been in great form consistently for 2 years. We’ve got to get past this knee-jerk, flash-in-the-pan selection approach

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : I disagree. Dewald Pottie and Duanne Vermeulen meet your non flash in the pan requirements – the difference is they are in form – Deysel isn’t. The wrecking ball is going backwards

  • @Worcestershire Sauce (Comment 20) : well, Pottie is already there, so it really comes down to a Deysel v Vermeulen argument. Deysel was in pretty good nick prior to his injury and he was streets ahead of Vermeulen last year – ask Luke to go read the name just above his on the trophy he got last night.

  • Cape Town – Model Minki van der Westhuizen and her husband, Constant Visser, are to divorce.

Her publicist, Andrew Farr, confirmed on Monday that the couple had “recently” decided to get divorced.

“It is very friendly. But they don’t want to talk about it,” Farr told Die Burger. The couple married in October 2007.

The restaurant The Library in Stellenbosch, which Van der Westhuizen and Visser began together, closed down earlier this year.

They also made the news earlier this year as one of the glamour couples who took part in an awareness campaign against domestic violence by appearing naked in the February issue of the Marie Claire magazine.

“Our relationship is based on good morals, but not everyone wants to see us happy. We are continuously hearing rumours that we are about to get divorced,” Van der Westhuizen said then.

Farr said Van der Westhuizen didn’t want to personally comment on the planned divorce proceedings.

Visser couldn’t be reached for comment.

  • Must have been a very close call between Vermeulen and Deysel. I actually think Vermeulen can count himself unlucky since he’s had the longer run of form (2 good seasons on the bounce).

Deysel was simply awesome in his debut season but has unfortunately not had the same impact this year, which is probably due to his injuries. At his best however, he can be virtually unstoppable. Let’s hope he manages to regain last season’s form

  • @wpw (Comment 44) : I try to call it as I see it. You know I don’t dig Wee Pee but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have good players.

I’m a big fan of both Vermeulen and Deysel. Just think Wolla needs to add a bit more to his game than pure brute strength. As Rob said earlier, he’s been left to carry the side on his own at times.
I think that is what Pierre Spies has learnt over the past season…he’s always been exceptionally powerful but at the highest level that wasn’t always enough. He has refined his game a bit and added to it. Still strong and fast but now has a higher workrate and is less of a glory boy on the wing. Something that Bekker needs to learn.

  • @wpw (Comment 44) : I think all of us Sharks supporters will acknowledge that we didn’t play particularly well throughout the CC. Even when we were winning games, the team wasn’t quite clicking or gelling. It was more workmanlike than electric. There was a lack of spark or something. Definitely didn’t have the right blend in the centres and I don’t think the halfback combinations ever got time to settle properly.

Lots of work to do before the Super 14!
