Boyd returns

Well, some news, at least.

It seems that Chris Boyd will return to be the Sharks backline coach in the upcoming Super 14. Speaking to Craig Lewis of the Daily News, John Plumtree had the following to say about his old mate coming back:

“We really enjoyed working with him this year during a tough campaign. We had a number of disruptions through injury which made it difficult to maintain consistency. However, next year there will be more competition for places and so that will certainly add an edge to proceedings and hopefully we can take things up a notch.”

The proof of the pudding, as always, is in the eating, so let’s just hope that Boyd has more of an impact in 2010 than was visible in 2009. Grant Bashford and Deon Kayser will continue to play their roles in the coaching team for 2010 as well.

hmmmm, we seem to have got rid of a lot of backline players, how will there be more competition next year?

reading between the lines here, but does that mean there are more acquisitions to come?

  • @Whindy (Comment 5) : I disagree with you on that point. When Campese was backline coach at the Sharks we actually had a backline. The very year he left the Sharks stopped scoring tries.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 6) : Why did he leave , there seemed to be a bit of a fallout and he ended up coaching some schoolboy outfit, is that correct I seem to recall there being some problem, he definitely had an issue with AJ Venter, read an article he wrote about Deans not fitting into the aussie set up and he brought up an incident he had with AJ.

  • @Whindy (Comment 7) : Yes there was a fall out between Campese and the Sharks I heard with Muir who was head coach at the time, but I am not very sure of the facts, maybe Rob can help us with this? Its just was so coincidental that the very time that Campese left the Sharks backs last the ability to score tries and to run straight. Lots will argue that Campese has moved to a school and hasn’t done much there, but I honestly believe, that as obnoxious that he is, he did do something for the Sharks’ backline during his tenure at the Sharks.

  • @willa (Comment 8) : you have it spot on.

@knersboy (Comment 4) : I’m also not really sure what he means, since the only backline signing we know about is that of Ludik, which might still unravel if the Lions decide to be petty about it.

  • I will cling to the last game of the Super 14, Sharks vs Bulls,as an indication of what could be. If we are going to be hellbent on hoofing everything into the skies then a mathematician / scientist who can help our chasers to determine the exact time and place the ball will be playable on its decent will serve more purpose than any backline coach.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 15) : This has been my and Try time’s contention all along! The forwards work hard to get the ball only for the backs to hoof all the possession away! Its no wonder that sometimes the forwards then decide to keep the ball amongst themselves rather than to pass to the backline, and hence we get a beautiful try like the one scored by our forwards against the Lions in JHB!

  • No disrespect to the current crop, but take into consideration the backline Campo had to work with. Everyone in that set up was either infinitely promising or an established international… 9.Pienaar 10.James 11.Ndungane 12.Barritt 13.Murray 14. Pietersen 15. Montgomery, with the likes of Adi and Frans on the bench. That was a hell of a backline! Would he have the same success with what we have now? I was sorry to see him go, but I think we give him too much credit… If Boyd can polish Riaan into a mixture of Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith, while getting Ruan’s confidence back, he’ll be worth every penny.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 19) : Only three were not there last year, Barrit, James and Montgomery, so not a huge difference in the backline this year. But lets wait and see hope what you are saying is right and Boyd will be able to do wonders with 9. Pienaar 10 Hernandez 11. Mvovo 12 Adi/Swanie 13 Adi/Murray 14. Pietersen and 15 Ludick/Terrablanche!

  • And on another topic,

Thanks to Roger Waters and Pink Floyd for the following -

    They disembarked in 45
And no-one spoke and no-one smiled
There were too many spaces in the line.
    Gathered at the cenotaph
All agreed with the hand on heart
    To sheath the sacrificial Knifes.
    But now
    She stands upon Southampton dock
    With her handkerchief
    And her summer frock clings
To her wet body in the rain.
    In quiet desperation knuckles
    White upon the slippery reins
She bravely waves the boys Goodbye again.

And still the dark stain spreads between
    His shoulder blades.
A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves.
And when the fight was over
We spent what they had made.
But in the bottom of our hearts
    We felt the final cut.
