New Zealand Super 14 squads named

While South Africa are still squabbling and threatening court action, the Kiwis have already completed their rounds of civilised horse trading and have named their five Super 14 squads – each of which looks to have a nice balance of experienced players and up-and-coming talent. I repeat, there was no litigation or arbitration involved at any stage. Miraculous.

A few players have moved around – in particular, flyhalf Stephen Brett has moved from the Crusaders to the Blues, while wing Zac Guildford has gone from the Hurricanes (where he benched a lot last year) to the Crusaders. Daniel Bowden has moved in the opposite direction to Brett, while both scrumhalf Alby Matthewson and flank Serge Lilo have left the Canes to join the Blues. Luke Braid, one of the Blues’ best loose forwards last year, will play for the Chiefs in 2010.

Notable returnees from Europe include Chris Jack (Saracens via WP) and, of course, Dan Carter (Perpginan), both back with their beloved Crusaders, and the skillful Luke McAlister, who has returned to the Blues after a spell with Sale.

  • But this is because they have their heads on right. The players are controlled by the national union not by the regional unions. This stops all the crap that south african players have to go through (not that they or their agents don’t cause enough kak themselves). But we can’t keep harping on this can we.

  • @rekinek (Comment 3) : If you are not contracted to a Franchise you go to a pool called the draft and then any of their franchises can contract you for the S14

  • @Whindy (Comment 4) : yeah, basically, each franchise gets to name a max of 25 “untouchables”… everyone else goes into the draft and they are dished out based on the needs of each squad. Quite clever.

  • Okay – so are the untouchables chosen from a franchise they are contracted to for the year. And the pool dudes can then be drawn to play for any franchise? What happens after the year is over with them? (Can they then play for the franchise that drew them?)

John will be carefully managed as well, so we’d better find a way to get Jannie up and running, because he’s about the best tighthead we’ve got.

  • Regarding the draft.
Are the 25 untouchables contracted to a franchise? What happens if one of the 25 untoucheables decides they dont like their franchise anymore and they want to play for someone else, how do they go about it, lets say this guys name is Carter and absolutly everyone wants him.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 26) : This is how I understand it: Each Super 14 franchise picks their 25 untouchables out of their catchment area – that is the players that is contracted to the unions that makes up the S14 franchise. This means the Blues can pick 25 players from Northland/North Harbour/Auckland/Counties. All other players goes into the draft which means the other franchises can pick them up – not sure how these draft players are allocated, but I suspect all the franchise managers/coaches/NZRU get together and work it out, keeping in mind the best interest of the players, franchises and NZ rugby. I don’t think the draft players have much of a choice as to where they are going to play, but then any S14 contract would be better than none for those guys.

  • @MysticShark (Comment 56) : that’s spot on, according to the way I understand it.

I think the coaches indicate which positions they feel they’re weak in and those criteria are applied when doling out the draft players. So Pat Lam (if it’s still him coaching the Blues) would have said that he’s missing a flyhalf, hence Brett, being the top flyhalf in the draft, went to the Blues.

Thanks for that, that is also how I understand it but I was wondering about a contracted player (lets say Carter / McCaw who are in no doubt of having a contract with any of the franchises ) having a fallout with their coacn and wanting to go and play for another franchise. How are they then treated – as draft players or do they go the negotiation / contract route as we have here – ot do they just not move unless they are surplus to the 25.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 59) : umm

I guess they have to stick with the union they’re contracted to, although a player’s provincial contract seems to cover NPC only. The NZRU pays them to play Super 14. So ultimately, the union holding the provincial contract has first dibs, but the NZRU can presumably override that at S14 level
