Potgieter to skipper the Bok XV

The Springbok XV to face Saracens on Tuesday night has a far stronger look to it, particularly in the pack. Bulls loose forward Dewald Potgeieter takes over the captaincy from injured provincial teammate Chilliboy Ralepelle. It wouldn’t be unfair to say that the Bok tour group now has their backs to the wall, having lost the first two games of the five match trip. Potgieter leads a side that contains a far beefier front row, as well as more grunt in the loose trio. Cheetahs duo Adriaan Strauss and Wian du Preez join 50-test veteran CJ van der Linde in a completely different front row to the one that was embarrassed by an understrength Leicester Tigers outfit a week ago.  In the other change to the pack, Sharks blindside Jean Deysel continues his inevitable surge towards the test team as he replaces the frankly useless Davon Raubenheimer in the number 7 shirt.

Ruan Pienaar will again be at flyhalf, while Heini Adams is fortunate to retain the number 9 shirt ahead of his provincial rival, Francois Hougaard. Juan de Jongh is again at 13 and will hope that he receives more than the smattering of ball he got against Leciester, in order to show his off talents to their fullest.

South Africa: 15 Earl Rose, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Heini Adams, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Dewald Potgieter (captain), 6 Jean Deysel, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Danie Rossouw, 3 CJ van der Linde, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Wian du Preez.
Replacements: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Heinke van der Merwe, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Davon Raubenheimer, 20 François Hougaard, 21 Meyer Bosman, 22 Riaan Viljoen.

  • Potgieter has the potential to become a great captain and I think he will do a pretty good job against Saracens. Glad to see Deysel in the starting lineup and also very happy with the front row selected.

  • @LandShark (Comment 2) : Intersting comment, as I have said before, I believe we have the best captain ever at the moment, but what happens after Smit, there is no natural successor to Smit. Matfield is not a good captain, he has had success with the bulls but at no time have I ever felt it was due to his captaincy, I would love to see John Smit make it to 2011, but I am not confident so now we have a dilemma. I am sure Matfield will take over from Smit, but he will not go much further than 2011 anyway, so it will be intersting to see this guy, I know Chillyboy is earmarked, but I question whether he can make the side on ability alone??

  • I would have prefered Hougaard starting in Odwa’s place.Odwa is past his sell-by-date IMO. Also would have started with Riaan Viljoen at 15 to see what he can do. Definately a better team than against the tigers though
