According to a report on a French website, Argentine flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez has signed a contract with French Top 14 team team Racing Metro 92 and will move back to France in May this year.
Hernandez’s contract with the Sharks was only for a year, spanning the 2009 Currie Cup and 2010 Super 14 campaigns. There was some hope that, given Argentina’s potential inclusion in the Tri Nations from 2012 onwards, many of their top players, including Hernandez, would opt to play their domestic rugby in the Republic. It appears as though Hernandez, at least, has closed the door on this option for now, if the reports are true.
Racing Metro are the same club that recently broke the bank to lure Frans Steyn to Paris. Hernandez is also earning far less at the Sharks than his European market worth and I wonder if a disappointing Currie Cup campaign hasn’t been a factor is his decision to rather chase the Euro again.
Hernandez will, according to the report, head to Paris in May after the end of the Super 14.Tweet
