Juan Hernandez looks to Paris

According to a report on a French website, Argentine flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez has signed a contract with French Top 14 team team Racing Metro 92 and will move back to France in May this year.

Hernandez’s contract with the Sharks was only for a year, spanning the 2009 Currie Cup and 2010 Super 14 campaigns. There was some hope that, given Argentina’s potential inclusion in the Tri Nations from 2012 onwards, many of their top players, including Hernandez, would opt to play their domestic rugby in the Republic. It appears as though Hernandez, at least, has closed the door on this option for now, if the reports are true.

Racing Metro are the same club that recently broke the bank to lure Frans Steyn to Paris. Hernandez is also earning far less at the Sharks than his European market worth and I wonder if a disappointing Currie Cup campaign hasn’t been a factor is his decision to rather chase the Euro again.

Hernandez will, according to the report, head to Paris in May after the end of the Super 14.

  • I was expecting something like this to be honest, but it brings up a question of flyhalf depth at the sharks, who will play at ten in the currie cup this year or if jmh is injured in the super 14, other than that the squad looks very good, but flyhalf is a crucial position

  • this actually makes sense from a player’s perspective. go to a different geography, pick up few tips, some exposure and go back to where the money is. and a year should be enough to give beck to a buying club.

me thinks sharks should concentrate on shaping up some available resources, ie. some youngsters from the academy or even pienaar. stick with a player, let him do mistakes and grow into position.

  • Obviously we can`t blame Hernandez! Any decent flyhalve who had to play with Pienaar or Kockett inside him would`ve been looking around for a better option . . .
    He deserves better.
