There’s an unconfirmed rumour doing the rounds that Juan Martin Hernandez may miss the entire 2010 Super 14 owing to a back injury. The current prognosis for the Argentine pivot is 6 months on the sideline, meaning that, if the rumour is true, Hernandez had made his last appearance for the Sharks.
Other flyhalf options are thin on the ground, with Len Olivier already having been released and Ruan Pienaar and Guy Cronjé both recovering from off-season operations (knee and foot respectively). Our prediction is that Monty Dumond will be prevented from going to join the Cheetahs and will instead be the Sharks’ first-choice flyhalf in the Super 14.
It may well be that we’ll get the opportunity to see Pat Lambie play in what may well be his best position, far sooner than planned. We’ll keep you posted as this develops.

why are you so bent on Lambie playing FL? have you seen him playing there?
@rekinek (Comment 1) : no, but I’ve heard that the coaches are!
Man, really wish we’d hung on to Tian Meyer!
@robdylan (Comment 2) : he looked good at fulback so why fix what aint broken. or is he another steyn/pienaar wunderkind.
for his sake I hope not.
Monty wasn`t bad. He killed the Bulls for us.
@Original Pierre (Comment 4) : Are you talking about Pretoria game ?
That was argie.
Glass half Full – I see a perfect opportunity to get Dan over here now..
@Original Pierre (Comment 4) : @rekinek (Comment 5) :
having said that.
Monty was quite a surprise package last year. Not flashy but solid and proved the point.
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 6) : i may be overdoing it … but when I hear Dan I immediately think of sighting
would go well with flasher boys
I wonder if this is not a blessing in disguise. Maybe Ruan can be first choice flyhalf after all… It would be good for him to play the entire S14 at 10…
@rekinek (Comment 5) : the Durban game.
I agree with Pierre. There’s no point in arguing the case now. Monty is our flyhalf and we’ve got to get behind him.
@rekinek (Comment 5) : No the Durban one. I didn`t see it, was at Newlands, but I know we won and Monty started.
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 6) : Who might Dan be?
Oh and you almost blew my cover over at the lions den LOL
@rekinek (Comment 8) :
In essence then – he’d be the Perfect 10 – no pun intended!
@wpw (Comment 9) : Ruan’s also injured
@wpw (Comment 9) : Or Ruan could be first choice flyhalf for our VC side hehehe
@Original Pierre (Comment 11) :
THE ONE AND ONLY MR. DAN CARTER!!
Why so Pierre?? What is your cover, 007?
@wpw (Comment 9) : i’m also thinking along those lines.
@Original Pierre (Comment 14) : that would definately build up his confidence
@robdylan (Comment 13) : do we know when this operation recovery will end or are we in for poor Waylon Murray scenario?
@Original Pierre (Comment 11) : Monty was superb in that game. Utterly superb. It was the performance that started to convince me that the bloke could actually be a reasonable option at 10. Since then, I haven’t wanted him to leave anymore
@rekinek (Comment 18) :
WM is going to the Lions, not?
@rekinek (Comment 18) : goodness, I hope not. But I’m not convinced Ruan is going to be fit to start the first game.
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 20) : I was referring to this veeeeery long recovery that kept him sidelined for mmost of the year.
Not sure whether he’s going to Lions – hope not.
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 20) : it’s not confirmed that he’s going anywhere… we’ve heard that both the Lions and the Bulls have made offers. My sources suggest that he’ll definitely be with us for the Super 14. Will decide what to do after that.
Still reckon Swannie and Waylon could be a dynamite centre combo for us.
Heya all, Happy New Year!! Did u guys see that Fransie Steyn made no22 in SaRugby’s top 50 Boks? Im starting to miss the guy, hope he comes back to the Sharks sooner than later.
@JarsonX (Comment 24) :
I think we gonna miss him true
@JarsonX (Comment 24) : top 50 boks of 2009? Yeah, he’d make 22 on that list, if you ask me.
@robdylan (Comment 26) : top 50 of all time
@JarsonX (Comment 27) : where do I find this thing ?
@rekinek (Comment 28) : sa rugby dot com, maybe its the top 50 since re-admission
@JarsonX (Comment 29) : thanx
@JarsonX (Comment 27) : well, you know I don’t rate the kid nearly as highly as he rates himself…
@JarsonX (Comment 29) : yip, since re-admission, twb13 is 19th
@robdylan (Comment 31) : agree, but im sure some blame should go to the coaches/selectors, if he only played 1 position, he couldve been rated higher, who knows what couldve been
@robdylan (Comment 31) : i dont think its possible for anyone to rate him as highly as he rates himself
John smit is the solution to the flyhalf crisis,
@JarsonX (Comment 33) : yeah, perhaps
@war1 (Comment 34) : my point exactly
For the love of it all!!!!!! How do a union invest a large amount of money in a foreign national player every so often and then refuses to develop it’s own talent? Now the Sharks “gave away” some good talent in the likes of Len Olivier and Tian Meyer. And almost Monty as well. It would have been a perfect opportunity for Ruan to play the WHOLE S14 at 10 if he was not injured. Has the habit of the Sharks to always contract a foreigner at 10 pivot (Townsend, Brown, Lacroix, Michalak and Hernandes) lead to a vicious cycle of throwing away our talent? I hope to see Guy and Monty to get ample game time now, with Ruan stepping in later. Geez I’m actually upset with this. I wonder how big an influence Straueli has in this shyte. And will I be amased if halve way through the year that we have signed this-or-that international flyhalf for the S14 2011? And NO Ice, leave Dan out of this. This is about R.U.G.B.Y, not the Ladies version of FHM
@JustPlainSHARK (Comment 38) :
Dude, last time I checked Dan Carter has been the best flyhalf in the world for quite some time.
The fact that he is an underwear model is just a bonus for the likes of Ice, rekinek and klempie.
@JustPlainSHARK (Comment 38) :
In MY books (and the World’s) , and no – not the ladies version of FHM book – he is one of the best ever…
So – as Wes has rightfully pointed out (funny how WP supporters just have an ‘eye’ for these things)
the fact that is one gorgeous piece of meat – is simply a Bonus!
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 40) : his eyes are too close together
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 40) : Thanx for clearing the Dan issue up. However I don`t think you should hold your breath. . .
Regarding the WTR site issue, don`t worry about it, I just thought I`d have more fun if they didn`t know where my loyalties are hehehe
@robdylan (Comment 41) :
actually…I have never even noticed he HAD eyes…not an “eye-girl” so to speak!
@Original Pierre (Comment 42) :
I realised that afterwards!
@JustPlainSHARK (Comment 38) : With respect to Len Olivier, he’s hardly home grown, nor the next Dan Carter. He didn’t play a single senior game for the Sharks in a season, so his departure can’t really be lamented.
Tian Meyer wasn’t first choice at age group level and otherwise, Guy Cronje seems to be developing, otherwise, really good flyhalves are hardly falling off trees, anywhere in the world.
If you want a world clas team, you need world class players. If you can’t find them locally, you buy them.
It’s the professional age of sport, and like it or not, that’s the way it works.
@Baldrick (Comment 44) : but we can hardly be accused of giving ANYONE, either homegrown or not, a real chance to settle in the position…
I reckon Monty will do the deed for us this year. We just need to back him and give him the continuity. Guy is still in plaster and I’m not sure what Ruan’s current prognosis is, so it’s not like there is any other option. Wes Dunlop is training with the Sharks XV as their flyhalf…
So we`re back to Charl Mcleod and Monty? They were okay in the cc for us. Hope they make the grade in super 14!
@Original Pierre (Comment 46) : there’s also that oke with the monkey face… he was quite good a year ago…
@wpw (Comment 39) : didn’t know that.
any idea where i can review the ads
@robdylan (Comment 47) :
rory ?
@rekinek (Comment 49) : that’s the one. He was pants all 2009 long, but a sure matchwinner the year before. How quickly we forget…
Am visiting in Sharks country and saw Butch Jame sin the gym yesterday, i probably should’ve told him to come back. He would be my no.1 for sure. Above herri and ruan. Pat is a bladdy good flyhalf played a teams and first team at michaelhouse there on many occasions. Distribition great aswell as drawing the man before the pass. Monty could backfire you never really know what he is gonna do form wise.
@robdylan (Comment 50) : the monkey face got me confused
considering pienaar’s op and the fact that rory played little recently we may very well have scrummie crisis.
@JJR (Comment 51) : JJ, although I agree that Pat is a phenomenally talented youngster, I am worried that throwing him into the Super 14 deep end as starting flyhalf would be too risky right now.
@rekinek (Comment 52) : Charl McLeod will never let us down and Ross Cronje is also a talent… scrumhalf is the one position that I’m not worried about
@rekinek (Comment 48) :
How about using google??
@wpw (Comment 55) : too much of a good thing ….
@Baldrick (Comment 44) : Oh I agree totally with you. But the Sharks bought Len Olivier but never used him. Look at where Morne Steyn was when Hougaard was still with the Bulls. On the bench. And where is he now? He is also not the next Dan Carter, but for a few dollars less he is still good enough and developed “in-house”. My point is that the Sharks never really consider local talent for the fly half berth or to give them OPPORTUNITIES. With the contracting of those foreign fly halves that I mentioned, only Michalak assisted in the winning of the CC in 2008. The results does not speak at all. So yes it’s a professional game, but spending huge amounts with very few yield is just not on!
@JustPlainSHARK (Comment 57) : To have a world class team (as you said) and to have a world class team THAT wins tournaments are two different entities.
@JustPlainSHARK (Comment 57) : i agree with you.
must say that morne steyn does not excite me but he is a very good example how you can nurture a player, patience and perseverance against talent & flair. and you can’t argue with what bulls have in their cabinet
@rekinek (Comment 59) : I wouldn’t have persevered with Steyn for as long as the Bulls did. A case of a blind squirrel eventually finding a nut? He started to revert to type on the year-end tour, didn’t he?
@robdylan (Comment 60) : yip.
but none of the springboks was exciting either so I guess it’s fair to wait and see what happens this year.
btw – ruan didn’t exactly step up either.
@rekinek (Comment 61) : no, but we all know he’s a confidence player and he’s being buggered around second to none.
@robdylan (Comment 62) : i’m a bit tired of making /hearing excuses for pienaar.
but yes, he’s been buggered around and perhaps in a long run plum didn’t make such a good decision by playing him at 9.
@rekinek (Comment 63) : that was Ruan’s decision and the coach backed him on it. The fact that Rocket was injured and out-of-form helped.
Look, Ruan had a bad second half of 2009, but his early form at flyhalf was good. He’s a great player and we need to find a way to get the best out of him.
@robdylan (Comment 64) : perhaps couch should have known better.
i don’t want to be horrid to the guy but with all the backing he gets í don’t think it is unreasonable to expect more of him.
@rekinek (Comment 65) : Ruan needs a good head doctor. A guy like Tim Goodenough could really get him playing at a superb level. But Plum (and I guess Rudi) don’t seem to think it’s worth the investment.
@robdylan (Comment 66) :
Well – the Union has invested in them – perhaps time to through personal beliefs in the water and try a new approach and see if it works for THE TEAM – they are the one’s having to supply the trophy’s..
We want return on that investment – WE DEMAND IT!!
@robdylan (Comment 66) :
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 67) :
guess so .
but nothing stops him from doing it himself – i would imagine he can afford.
@rekinek (Comment 68) : that’s a good point, actually…
@robdylan (Comment 69) :
I think the whole team could do with it – so I still beleive we need to get help – not just for one guy – even if he can pay fr himslef
@rekinek (Comment 68) : Maybe he can`t pay for himself after the burglary . ..
@Original Pierre (Comment 71) :
Burglary?
@Original Pierre (Comment 71) : what burglary ?
did Ice finally got in
@rekinek (Comment 73) :
He has never been on my stalking list!!
confirmed by Greenaway: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=6&click_id=18&art_id=iol1262802635907R212
You can take this as fact now.
@robdylan (Comment 75) :
REECE???
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 76) : Reece
@robdylan (Comment 77) :
Ohhhhh….okaaayyyy…(do I smell a bit of nepotism?)
@rekinek (Comment 73) : Ruan had some Kruger Rands stolen as I recall. Don`t blame me I`m in Cape Town remember!
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 78) : nah, Reece and I aren’t related
@Original Pierre (Comment 79) : I didn’t know that.
I didn’t think it was you – you sound like you would go after Ruan himself and not his belongings
@robdylan (Comment 80) :
Talking bout Plum bringing in an old sharks family member..
@rekinek (Comment 81) :
@Original Pierre (Comment 79) :
I seem to remember his domestic worker was arrested shortly afterwards.
They apparently also swiped quite a few thousand quid (80 000 I think)
Eish!!
@One-eyed Ice (Sailing the seas of 2010 with the Sharks) (Comment 82) : well, good. Those guys understand what it means to be passionate about the team
@rekinek (Comment 81) :
@rekinek (Comment 81) : Hey I won`t harm Ruan I`d like to give him free stuff rather.
Like a plane ticket to Japan where he can`t sabotage us . . .
