A fourth Bulls players has gone down and adds to the Pretoria side’s mounting injury toll ahead of their opening Super 14 game, against the Cheetahs next month. Utility back Francois Hougaard injured his knee at training and is touch-and-go to be fit in time.
The Bulls have already lost the services of Bakkies Botha, Chilliboy Rallepelle and Akona Ndungane for the opening rounds, with Wynand Olivier apparently also carrying a niggle, which is expected to heal in time. Hougaard, a junior scrumhalf who has recently spent more time on the wing, will be missed as the Bulls are short of experience out wide. Bryan Habana’s off-season move to the Stormers has contributed to a dearth of experienced wingers, with Ndungane’s broken leg only exacerbating the problem.
Youngster Gerhard van den Heever will no doubt fill one of the wing slots after a strong season in 2009, but it’s anybody’s guess who the other jersey will go to in Hougaard’s absence. Perhaps veteran John Mametsa may be handed one more opportunity to show his worth at Super 14 level.Tweet
