Bouncing back

Pardon me for interrupting…

This is a fantastic team.  There is a wonderful blend between youth and experience.  You have a bunch of guys that have tasted success and we know they are hungry for more because they are better than what they have showed in the last 12 months.

The tight 5 is virtually unmatched in the competition with depth and experience sporting a Springbok starting front row, with two more Springboks playing off the bench for the front row.  Two Springbok captains just in numbers 1 to 5.  A fiery loose-trio with the hardest bastard in SA Rugby since Schalk Burger in 2004 and a newly acquired number 8 who was by far the forward of the Currie Cup in a losing team.

One of the most versatile scrumhalf’s in the country who struggles to make the starting 15 and another very promising youngster keeping him honest.

There is arguably one of the most naturally gifted players you will ever hope to see in this generation who will probably fulfil the vital role of pivot in the Super 14 campaign.

There is a total of 6 backline players with international test experience with the addition of one of the more exciting fullbacks you will ever hope to see in SA Rugby in recent times who will surely get his international cap in 2010.

Here we have a team who thrives on the challenges of touring, and have proven in the past to actually love it!

Here we have a team who has in their ranks, the greatest and most respected rugby captain in world rugby.

Here we have a team whose front row ended the career of a celebrated and vastly experienced Lions international prop and English international and also one who destroyed the All Blacks.

Here we have a team who has played in more semi-finals and finals in the last 10 years in Super rugby than what we care to remember.

Here we have a team which Pick and Go rates as statistically the best South African Super rugby team since the competition’s inception.

Here we have the Sharks, the team next to the All Blacks in a World Cup scenario who probably deserves a major title just through their consistency in performances over the years.

Here we have the Sharks, a team that is ready to bounce back, if they so choose.

  • the playing staff is more than capable, i read somewhere that ruan is “touch and go” to start the first game, so we may not be as short on flyhalves as we thought

  • @war1 (Comment 3) : my info is that Ruan is not being seriously looked at as a flyhalf option

  • There has been much talk so far of Ruan as flyhalf but last year Plum and Ruan made it very clear that he would be playing scrumhalf, which he did. PDivvy then selected him as a flyhalf / fullback.
I think Plum will be true to his word – as far as possible.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 6) : yes… Ruan will only be back at 10 when and if Ruan decides that’s what he wants to do.

  • That’s some positive writing, i like it! Still think the backs are our weak point but hey, you’re right about the experience thing. Maybe a little too much experience in the backline and not enough mags on those wheels…
