In a sure sign that SOMEBODY is Durban has their thinking caps firmly on, John Smit has been appointed captain of the Sharks for the 2010 Super 14 season.
There has been much speculation about the captaincy of late, since Smit (the Bok skipper) has not captained the Natal side since 2007. Johann Muller was preferred for last year’s ill-fated Super 14 campaign, while more recently, veteran fullback Stefan Terblanche lead the team in the Currie Cup.
John Plumtree today ended the doubt by confirming Smit as the captain – the best decision he could possibly have made. The Sharks have looked in sore need of leadership over the last year and Smit has held aloft every major trophy in world rugby (except the Super 14). There could not be a better man for the job.
The major challenge on Plumtree’s hands will be ensuring his captain can start every game, while still affording playing time to the du Plessis brothers, Bismarck and Jannie, who compete with Smit for the number 2 and 3 jerseys respectively.
Welcome back, Barney! It’s so good to see you back where you belong!Tweet
