The South African Under-20 training squad has been announced and six Sharks players are in the mix. The team to compete for the IRB Junior World Championships in July will be selected from this 38-man squad.

Perhaps the most talented 19-year-old in the country, Pat Lambie, has not been included, presumably on the grounds that he’s far more likely to play Super 14 rugby this year. All three of the Sharks under 19 locks from last year have been named, with Kene Okafor having represented the Baby Boks last year already. Peet Marais (brother of Sharks XV lock Jan-Andre) and the 2.06 metre Johan Schoonbie are also in the mix.

Promising hooker Monde Hadebe has also been named, along with a powerful loose forward from Dale College, Lubabalo Mtembu. Mtembu attended the Border Academy last year (and played for them at under 19 level) but has since thrown in his lot with the Sharks.

The final member of the Sharks under 19 contingent is winger Sibusiso Sithole.

Here is the full squad:

Blue Bulls – Clayton Blommetjies, Sampie Mastriet, Ernst Dinkelman, Andries Ferreira, Christiaan Stander, Mlungisi Bali, Vincent Koch, Luan Jacobs, Brenco Du Preez, Lean Schwartz, Jacobus Venter

Eastern Province – Thabiso Mngomezulu

Free State – Jamba Ulengo, Zandre de Bruin, Jacobus Scheepers, Marcell van der Merwe

Golden Lions – Garth April, Wandile Mjekevu, Rinus Riekert, Thurlow Kohler, Christiaan du Rand, Sebastian de Chaves, Ruan Dreyer, Elton Jantjies, Francois du Toit, Divan Ferguson, Jaco Taute

Kwazulu Natal – Kenechukwu Okafor, Johan Schoonbee, Peet Marais, Lubabalo Mtembu, Sibusiso Sithole, Monde Hadebe

Western Province – Berton Klaassen, Louis Schreuder, Helmut Lehman, Ruan Combrink, Willem Badenhorst.

  • And 11 Lions! How long before they all get to sign for the Sharks

Interesting, once again, only 1 from the Eastern Cape, bodes well for the Kings entry into Super Rugby!

  • @Greg (Comment 6) : ja, but if you look how many went to school there, you might find it’s more like 10 or more. If they had a franchise and a pro academy, perhaps more would stay.

Well not so sure about that :???: , Jaco Taute was impressive last season in the U19, as well as some short runs in more senior rugby. The difference for a pleasant(for me anyway  )change, is the Lions have options, Shark options are limited at the moment.

    Greg

It has nothing to do with Cheeky being involved at EP.

Before he arrived the likes of Pedrie, Russell, Ndungane twins, Hendrik Gerber, etc all left the province.

All these players and many more leave the province each year because there is no future for them (CC rugby or Super rugby)

The great whites were huge but they don`t give you air so you struggle to see everything that`s going on around you.

Also there was this niggling worry that my legs stuck out between those bars from time to time LOL

I had never heard of it before. Read about it in a fishing book. Apparently it was a German sub that had developed mechanical problems and was bombed by the SAAF from Durban.
Best part of the story is that the allies picked up the info from the local Zulus who had been given the news via drumbeat from village to village. Initially the message was that a big silver fish had been washed up. The Allies did not think much of this as they presumed that it was a whale. When later messages came through that there were now people walkjing on the fish they got suspicious and dispensed a recce crew and bomber.

Also according to this book there are super huge sharks around there.

Thats what I read, the reason for the story was because he was demonstrating how accurately and quickly the bush telegraph worked. remember this was some 70 odd years ago.
I remeber my first time at Sodwana, it was a remote area with communities fairly isolated from the outside world.
