Sharks squad named for friendlies

The Sharks squad to travel down to Cape Town for the upcoming triangular friendly series has been named. The major talking point will be the inclusion of Willem Alberts.

SARU has indicated that Alberts, who has not yet been released by the Lions, should not play in the tournament, but the Sharks look set to ignore this advice and play him anyway.

There are few other surprises and Plumtree has opted to go with the tried-and-tested names from last year. Deon Carstens misses out, but my understanding is that he may have a niggle, while the injured Ruan Pienaar has also not been considered. Alberts, Gerhard Mostert and Pat Lambie are the only players in the group not to have represented the Sharks at Super 14 level before.

Here is the squad:

Props: Jannie du Plessis, John Smit, Pat Cilliers, Beast Mtawarira
Hookers: Bismarck du Plessis, Craig Burden
Locks: Johann Muller, Steven Sykes, Gerhard Mostert, Alistair Hargreaves
Loose forwards: Keegan Daniel, Ryan Kankowski, Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts, Jean Deysel
Scrumhalves: Rory Kockott, Charl McLeod
Flyhalves: Monty Dumond, Pat Lambie
Centres: Adi Jacobs, Andries Strauss, Waylon Murray, Luzuko Vulindlu, Riaan Swanepoel
Wings: Odwa Ndungane, JP Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo
Fullback: Stefan Terblanche

  • I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t cast the net a little wider for this group.

  • I feel we needed some new ideas at centre, particularly outside. Swannie is our man at 12, but Adi and Waylon both need a rocket and Strauss is just such a natural fit for the Sharks XV

  • Well I think it is a good thing to include Alberts.

They are now forcing SA Rugby to get involved where they stated they are not willing to.

Christo Ferreira might actually have to do some work now…

  • @robdylan (Comment 26) : yes but he also isn’t first choice. i give the guy credit for sticking around when he knows his role is cover. he gets very little game time as he can’t play for the sharks xv and he doesn’t get to play for the sharks unless there is an injury. and when he does play he does well enough for someone that has splinters in his backside.

  • Guys let me just say that this is the worst looking backline I have ever seen since Gaffie and Chad hooked up with Roger Smith. While the forwards are as always impressive, we only have one incumbent bok in JP Pietersen at the back. Since when did the Sharks feature such a mishmash of oldies and ‘never-weres’? Only Lambie fills me with hope…

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 83) : How can it be a tournament if it’s friendlies only.

Habana even said it doesn’t matter if they win or lose.

And the matches are to be played over 4 stanzas.

Should be gratis entry for practice matches.

Ludik will be VERY valuable back-up for Stefan. Stefan is getting on a bit and he WILL need to be rested on more than one occasion.

  • @robdylan (Comment 90) : I’m just having a general whinge at practice matches (full strength teams or not) being dressed up as a ‘tournament’ to make a quick buck.

  • And while I’m doing my grumpy old man bit. Doesn’t the word ‘tri-series’ mean three series? Is this the first of three?

@KSA Shark © (Comment 92) : fullbacks : lambie, dumond, even jordan can make a step up. or move odwa there as he may be loosing a bit on pace.

i wonder how these guys coming through the system feel when the management goes on the shopping spree.

and ludik is not exactly a name.
