Muller’s Sharks swansong

It seems as though a number of players are planning on drawing the curtain on their Sharks career at the end of the 2010 Super 14, with Johann Muller the latest to be linked to a big-spending foreign club.

According to a report, Muller is in the advanced stages of negotiation with Ulster – the very side that is expected to be sending BJ Botha the other way at the end of the Northern Hemisphere season. While the highly-rated tighthead seems determined to return to South Africa and fight for a World Cup place, the veteran lock forward seems to have decided that a 2011 berth is not likely to be in his future.

The usual caveat here – this is by no means confirmed and is all still rumour – but if those rumours are to be believed, Ruan Pienaar may also be looking to make Ravenhill his home. In his case, though, the rumours seem somewhat more spurious and I’m sure a lot will depend on how well the Super 14 – and upcoming Springbok season – unfold for the temperamental halfback.

  • It is unfortunate that the global economy is such that players must go to Europe for the big pay day. A guy like Big Joe has given his all for the Sharks for a long time now, nobody can question his loyalty to the franchise. But Rob is right, we can not begrudge him the opportunity to pad his bank account before he can no longer play the game.

  • I can only imagine that Johan either doesnt want to or has given up any hope of playing for the Boks, now and in the future. I dont begrudge him making some good money, but as TT says he could be shooting himself in the foot here. If he has a blinder of a season (and its possible now that he waont be hindered with the captaincy) then he will surely merit a lookin in an extended Bok squad.

  • Muller is the type of lock they love in the UK, donkeyworker hard as nails. WIll fit in perfectly.

Here is what concerns me about the Sharks however.

There are very little youngsters coming through, or given the opportunity right now to convince me that when the old guard leaves, and I believe it will be more than 3 or 4, that the Sharks will be okay.

I believe we can prepare ourselves for a massive slump the likes of when Teich’s and the lot retired at the turn of the decade unless something changes quite drastically.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 13) : I think you have it spot on… he’s convinced that he’s nowhere near the Bok frame. The selection of Hargreaves ahead of him last year was apparently the final straw.

  • @Morné (Comment 15) : ja, but at least when it comes to the second row, we’re better positioned than most.

This Super 14 is going to be a HUGE one for Hargreaves. The oke really needs to step up and show that he’s got the game to fill Joe’s big shoes.

Have you noticed that the Sharks have three locks in the latest Baby Bok squad? Aside from Sykes, Hargreaves, Mostert and Rhodes who are with the Super 14 team, we still have last year’s decent under 21 pairing, Jandre Marais and Anton Bresler. Then the three youngsters, Okafor, Peet Marais and Schoonbee.

No shortage of raw material. The challenge – as always – is to bring them through and I agree that we have failed miserably in that area in the past.

I really hope he has a blinder of a Super 14 and stays injury free. His leadership will be called upon by John Smit no doubt.

By the way I read somewhere that even thou John Smit was named as captain for the Sharks he will still be rested for alot of the games. Any truth in that?

I’d be happy for John to start 8 or 9 of the 14 games.

I think we’re pretty much resigned to losing Joe, which is a shame after 9 seasons of loyal service, but losing Pienaar at the same time would be a huge blow. He is playing very well this year and he genuinely seems to be enjoying his stay in Ulster despite the weather! I think he’ll stay, particularly if a few more Sharks boys come and join him!

Pienaar would definitely be at scrum half if Boss goes.
